They're Back....

Wolves spotted in Fairbanks, AlaskaNot that long ago I posed a blog about the wolves that had been hanging around our area. Well, it looks like they're back. Two residents at 9.5 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road spotted the wolves in their driveways. The first report was of two very large black wolves; the second sighting was only one. One, however, is quite enough.

Please be diligent when letting your pets out or when you're outside. Although the wolves haven't shown any aggression toward humans, they have shown that they aren't afraid of us. The last sightings in early December had several in a driveway refusing to move even for a vehicle. It wouldn't take much to provoke an attack, which is something no one wants to see happen.

If you have any questions or want to report a sighting, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game can be reached at (907) 459-7231. Stay alert and be safe!

Wolves are interesting animals. I am sure that sometimes they can be considered pests. Believe it or not, we still have coyotes in this area. Occasionally, there is an article in the paper that someone's foo-foo has been attacked and killed by them.

Hi Jesse and Kathy, I guess wolves are dying off??  I lived in Anchorage in 1969 and it seems there were more of them then but I really don't know. I think we have them in Texas but probably a different kind.  I don't think I would want to run into one...that is for sure....  Alaska is a beautiful state.

Michael Thornton: Hi, Michael, We've known people who have had them as pets and it usually doesn't have a great outcome.  I don't think God meant for us to tame them... nor should be (in my opinion).  This group has claimed a few foo-foo's already... probably 4 or 5 this winter.

Kay Perry: Hi, Kay, I think you're right.  We don't have nearly as many roaming around as we did 20 years ago.  A lot were killed off thanks to 'predator control' initiatives.  When we were still operating the lodge, there were many times we would run into them on the trails (mostly in winter); they were awesome to see but you were always cautious of their power.

Jon Zolsky, your Daytona Beach connection: No, they're not protected.  We actually have a predator control initiative in place.  They're free game, so to speak.  A fellow in the area where they have been seen was outside waiting for them (they had been through his property a couple of times). While he was outside, with a rifle no less, he let his two dogs out and the wolves snatched one right from under his nose.  He didn't even realize it was missing for a few minutes until it wasn't coming to him when called.  They are that quick.

Wow, that's got to be scary to see them on your driveway.  We have a Husky and some of the neighborhood kids think she's a wolf!

Kathy Passarette, Creative Home Expressions: I agree.  What's worse is that they aren't showing any fear of humans and they are in a very heavily populated area.  It's a situation that could have a very tragic ending if not monitored.  I bet your Husky is beautiful, btw.
