This Saturday, June 9, superstar racehorse I’ll Have Another will attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years. If he wins the Belmont Stakes this weekend, I’ll Have Another will go down in racing history. But he’ll have to do it without a piece of equipment that he’s worn for his previous wins, a Flair nasal strip.

Flair equine nasal strips are similar to the BreatheRight strips worn by some human athletes, and people who suffer from snoring. The strips support the soft tissue of the nasal passages, opening the airways in a horse’s nose and significantly reducing the risk of pulmonary hemorrhaging during a race, when racehorses are pushed to the limit. The strips are approved for use in competition by several different equestrian sports organizations, and they are a simple, safe piece of equipment that can help keep a horse’s lungs healthy.

New York racing officials though have banned the strips on the state’s thoroughbred racetracks. Racing stewards are unsure of how to regulate nasal strips, and have banned their use in New York until a consensus can be reached, so I’ll Have Another will have to compete on Saturday without a nasal strip in accordance with New York track rules.  His owner and trainer are confident however that it will not impact the horse’s performance, and are hopeful for a Triple Crown win. Tune in to Belmont Stakes coverage on NBC beginning at 5pm ET to watch racing history unfold (hopefully!)

Hi Cindy,

I saw the beautiful horse and the jockey on TV the other night and they were talking about the ban. Hope it doesn't put the horses in danger but I am sure the organization is just trying to do what they think is right and do not want any cheating as well.

I think this is the favored horse so I hope everyone is happy after the race. Good luck.
