I am so over adults carrying on like a bunch of third graders.  Anyone who attended the Harrisburg Town Council meeting last night knows exactly what I am talking about.

I would like to preface this post with my professed love of Harrisburg and Cabarrus County.  I moved to Harrisburg because I have two young children (7 and 10 currently) and I wanted the small town community with access to the "big city" right down the road.  I hope someday to be a member of our town council so I, too, can serve my community in a way that befits the needs and wants of our people.  With that said I shall now rant!

I gathered my family together yesterday evening, complete with my seven year old and ten year old and my handsome husband, to go to Harrisburg Town Hall to hear and participate in the discussions surrounding growth and development of Harrisburg.  We do this, I told my children, because we are citizens in one of the most blessed countries in the world.  We can, and have responsibility to, make our voices heard regarding issues of our community.  There is a proper process we must adhere to. Yadda yadda yadda.

The particular issue on the agenda this evening is one that has created a good bit of controversy in our area; to get a big box store or not.  It makes no difference at all  where I stand on this issue.  I am writing because I was asked to leave before the meeting started because I,along with about 100 other people, didn't have a chair.  Oh come on now!!!  We have had numerous town council meetings.  We have had to adjourn these meetings to have at larger venues every time big box has been on the agenda.  Last night was the "final word" on the issue.  Either we are getting a big box or not.  Does the town council expect  anyone to believe that they were unaware that a crowd may come swarming in to hear the news????

At any rate, over half of the citizens who took time out of their days to participate in the democratic process were told to,"Check the 11 o'clock news for an update."  My children were curious why I told them we were going to a meeting but instead we ended up standing outside town hall talking to news crews.

I will take my children back to town hall again next month when there is nothing huge on the agenda so my son will actually have the information he needs for a school project.  But I can hardly wait for us to attend the town council meetings when Leigh is mayor and I am on the council.   Harrisburg is a wonderful, wonderful town.  We have a fantastic way of life here.  We do not treat people the way people were treated last night.

I'm sure Harrisburg is wonderful and citizens like you - those who care about the process - are what make it that way.  If you ever decide it's time for a move, consider Tulsa!  We have an excellent mayor!

Virginia,

I can completely agree with you.  I have been to numerous school board meetings in my area.  We go to get informed and contribute as good citizens should.  In the end I got frustrated and angry at how things are done.  I must admit I had to take a little break.  I just love this quote from Justice [Louis] Brandeis  "the most important office in a democracy is that of citizen."

Kevin -Exactly!!!  I can only hope the people in charge of spreading democracy across the far reaches of the world can do a better job representing what it is  than the circus side show I saw on Monday...until I was aaked to leave.

Anthony - What a wonderful offer.  I tried living away from NC once before.  I went to MI for four years.  No slam on MI but I love calling North Carolina home.  If the occasional bad board meeting is my biggest complaint about Harrisburg then I feel blessed.  Maybe I will visit at some pont though.  I have never been to OK.  I will look you up when I get there. Thanks.

LEIGH FOR MAYOR!  In 2008 or as soon as we can get that emperor off his chair!!!  =)  You have to help me spread the word....I think we'll start a blog about it?

I'm still flabbergasted that he called you down in front of a whole room and told you-a taxpaying resident-to learn about it on the news.  What a jackleg.

I'm on our Town Council.  It is televised and sometimes I am embarassed by how some town councilors act. I often wonder if it is because of the television camera.  Unfortunately, it is often hard to get things done because of egos and agendas.

Are you running for mayor Leigh?  Very cool  (I don't think I would want the headaches but I'm sure you would be awesome!)

Yes. Yes. Leigh for mayor next year.  She just needs that time to figure out how she is going to manage her time.  Maybe more buyer agents and a listing agent or two will do the trick?  Or a VA.  Linda, does she have your vote?  Maybe we can work out an honorary citizenship of Harrisburg.  I promise you will enjoy it.  We have a fantastic farmer's market.

Yes, Linda-I am running for mayor.  Simply because I have had ENOUGH of the little emperor.  I don't want the headaches, either, but if I'm going to complain about it, I'd better be willing to put my money where my mouth is. =)

Very cool!  I'll vote for you!  I actually was the campaign manager for our current mayor.  We have an election this year so we are just getting our slate together.  Our major has probably a 60 hour a week job so no way to do real estate and mayor.
