FAQ:  How do I appeal my PG County real estate tax assessment?

With the rapidly falling home values over the past few years this is a question I get more and more often.

It is a relatively simple process to appeal the assessed value of your home.

The first thing to do would be to visit the PG County tax site to see what the current PG County real estate tax assessment is.  It might be that the home has already seen a significant reduction in tax value.

If you are not satisfied with your assessment it's time to generate a written appeal to PG County.

If you just purchased your home:

  • If the settlment occurs between Jan 1 and Jun 30 you have 60 days following settlement to complete the appeal.
  • Complete the appeal form.
  • Attach a copy of your settlement papers showing what you paid for the home
  • Either mail in the appeal or deliver it in person

If you already own your home

  • You can file a petition by the first Monday following January 1 in any given year.
  • This will appeal your taxes for the following tax year which begins July 1.
  • Complete the appeal form
  • Attach documentation explaining why you think the value is incorrect - I will be happy to provide you with information about the comparable sales in your neighborhood
  • Either mail in the appeal or deliver it in person

Forms should be sent to:
