Look at the picture below.  This is a roof-top vent cap for an HVAC furnace.  What's wrong?

HINT:  Most metal vents are made of smooth metal.

ANSWER:  Dents come from impact.  Unless there was a menacing contractor up there on the roof who went nuts with a hammer, these dents are likely caused by hail.  Next thing to do is check the condition of the roof shingles.
