FAQ # 9 - Is This a Safe Neighborhood?
I am constantly asked by many of my buyer clients, “Is This a Safe Neighborhood?” Consequently, my answers are always the same. I advise them to come back at different times during the day and night to look for any suspicious activity in the neighborhood, and to talk with many of the neighbors in the community. I have often found that if you ask the neighbors, you may find all the answers to your questions about any community, and you may even get more information that you wanted to know.

Police OfficerIn addition, I also recommend that they check with the local police stations about crime in the area. It's very easy to go online these days to get information about registered sex offenders living in the community, and also see a record of all types of crimes that were committed in the area you are planning to purchase a home. Real Estate agents have to be careful not to violate any federal housing laws when it comes to giving out information about communities. Steering is not permitted under federal housing laws, and it’s better for the potential home buyers to find out on their own about any crimes, and other offenses that may influence their decisions on buying any home in a particular neighborhood.

I have found that the Neighborhood Scout Report is a good source for checking on the statistics for crime. You can also check with the local Sheriff’s Department, and Police Department. Then look at the Registered Sex Offenders site too. Many communities even have their own Neighborhood Watch on patrol. Getting involved in your neighborhood watch is always a good idea. Everyone loves to keep their neighborhoods as safe as possible.

Hi, Jerry. One of my favorite sayings is, "Be the source of the source, and not the source of information".

Jerry:

All good answers when some one asks if a neighborhood is safe.  Let the buyer check the neighborhood out.  I haven't hear of Neighborhood Scout Report either.  Got to check it out.

Hi Debbie, I need to remember this saying. " Be the Source of the Source, and Not the Source of the Information." Have a Wonderful Evening!

Hi Debbie, I am sure you may be able to have that Neighborhood Scout Report since I found it online, and it appears to be National, and not just local.

Hi Evelyn, I love this new resource for buyers to get crime statistics in the neighborhood they are planning to move too. You may also have this Scout Report available in California too.

Jerry, here the Washington Post has a section in the online edition that lists incidints across the city on a little map.  We can just send people to their site.

Hi Pat, Your Washington Post online edition is a great place to direct residents in your area, who are concerned about any crime in their neighborhoods. It good to be a guide and direct them to the information.
