A Hamburger steeped in atmosphere and history…..
When I moved to Sarasota in 1984 one of the first places I was introduced to by the locals was a hamburger joint called “Duffy’s Tavern.” It was right across the street from the Manatee Public beach in a little shack with no air-conditioning and a few tables. The hamburgers were cooked in front of you, piled with grilled onions and served with icy cold mugs of beer to keep you cool. Sitting next to locals and tourists alike, it was easy to start up conversations and learn about the history of Duffy’s as well as that of the island. I made the trip from Longboat Key every month during the cooler seasons and let the summers count me as missing in action because the heat was just too much. Then, in 2003, Duffy’s moved to a new location and air conditioning was the draw that made it possible for me to visit any month of the year. It still has the island atmosphere and the same great food but in a more comfortable setting. A visit to Anna Maria Island is not complete without a stop at Duffy’s, a cold one and an incredible hamburger. They have many other choices on their menu but it is the burger that keeps me coming back along with the great service and the walk on the beach afterwards to try to unload some of the calories! Please take a look at their website link http://www.duffystavernami.com/about-duffys.html for the history, photos and menu! Most important! No credit cards accepted!
