ICommunity Planting Day, Crofton MD 2012f you happened to be driving along Route 3 in Anne Arundel County last Saturday, June 2, you probably wondered what all those people were doing in front of Crofton. 

They were Crofton residents participating in a planting day for the community and helping to put the finishing touches on a rain garden.

A rain garden has been discussed in this community for years and finally gained momentum over the past two years, as local leaders obtained professional advice from engineers, landscapers, and environmentalists.  Construction began in May after a grant was obtained for funding and Crofton Village Garden Club donated $3,000.

The purpose of this project is to reduce and mitigate storm water damage to creeks, streams, rivers and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay by diverting rain water run-off from the community to the rain gardens rather than the storm drain on Rt. 3, where it has flowed for years.

Cindy, I never thought we'd see it.  Some people in Crofton have been talking about this for about 30 years.  I guess the time is right now - leaders that were willing to work together and 2 sources of funds outside the tax dollars.

Debbie, I may have taken the "community" for granted until my daughter visited the community we lived in when she was born.  We used to say it was "just like Crofton, but the people aren't involved."  Now, she tells us, the golf course and club house are abandoned, about half the homes are bank owned and most of the others are run down.  Folks in this community ARE involved.  Maybe it's the fact that so many of them work for the government, government contractors and non-profits... they're accustomed to sticking there noses in and getting things done.
