DISCOVER TEXAS!

What a vast area to discover! Did you know that Texas covers 261,797 square miles? It has 254 counties and a population of 23.5 million people. The population of  Texas from 2005 to 2006 grew over 579,000 people! The largest population growth of any of the other state. Rockwell County grew the fastest of any county in the United States! It grew 7 times faster than the national average of 1.1 percent. It grew 7.9 percent. The city of Hutto Texas has grown over 580 percent since 1990! But according to the  Texas A&M Real Estate Center the growth may be slowing down. For example: Williamson County's population increased at an annualized rate of 7.1 percent from 2000 to 2002 compared with 7.9 percent in the 1990s.  One of the state's largest counties, Travis County, posted the most marked change in annualized rate of growth, declining from 4.1 percent in the 1990s to 2.1 percent from 2000-2002.

One will find that the geography of Texas spans a wide range of features. The Great Plains, the Rio Grande, Red River and Sabine River all provide natural state lines where Texas borders Oklahoma on the north, Louisiana and Arkansas on the east, New Mexico on the west, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south.

Most residents, divide Texas into 5 regions North, East, Central, South, and West. But the Texas Almanac divides Texas into four physical regions: Gulf Coastal Plains, Interior Lowlands, Great Plains, and The Basin and Range Province."

Texas has a gross state product of $1.09 trillion. Although Texas has some of the largest ranches in the world and the romantic folklore of some of these ranches are as large as the state itself. Contrary to popular belief ranching never was Texas main industry. Back before the great oil boom..Cotton was the main industry. To this day it still is one of the major industrys. The United States is the third largest producer of cotton in the world. But within the United States, and in Texas the South Plains is the largest contigous producer of cotton in the world! Other industrys are of course the cattle industry, Oil, High Technology, Bio Medical, and Aerospace and many others. Texas has a total of 56 companys in the Fortune 500 2nd only to New York who boast a total of 57.

There is an abundance of trees, deserts, mountains, beaches, and lakes. There's the Gulf of Mexico, 3, 700 streams, 15 major rivers, 166 lakes and over 30,000 Playa lakes in the state of Texas. There are 5 National Forest and 5 State Forest in the state of Texas. If your a nature lover there are more than 100 State controlled parks that cover over 600,000 acres of land! For a free state park guide simply go to Texas State Park Guide. If state parks don't interest you..there are 13 National parks in the state as well.

Danny,

This is a very nice post. Should do very well for a localism piece. The other day I read a post my Maggie about formatting pictures. If you did not read it I think you would enjoy it. http://activerain.com/blogs/maggiedokic  The space around your pictures would really help to set them off. Good luck my friend. I enjoyed this post of yours alot.

Danny, with all that growth you should be able to sell houses.  They need a place to live.  I wish we could get houses like the ones in this blog for those prices.

Danny, I really did miss your post.  I always learn something.  I did not know before the oil boom cotton was the largest product in Texas.  It is such a diverse state we have LOVED living here.  I'm really glad I'm in an area that has trees instead of sagebrush though.

Marchel, Cotton is King! The south Plains of Texas produces over a million bales of cotton a year. This is composed of 31 counties in Texas.

Nice post Danny...love all the info you provided!  We drove straight from El Paso to Houston with a 2 hour stop-over in Austin one time...I think that was about 261,000 squre miles of the 261,797 square miles! We had 4 small children with us...we were young and stupid...what can I say :)

Suzanne / Jennifer  - Your both welcome! Thanks for viewing it!

Mary Cindy - When I was younger....in 1975 I drove from the most southeast corner of the state (Port Arthur) to the Panhandle (Lubbock) non-stop. It took me somewhere around 11.5 hours to do that. I didn't even stop for gas! I was in a pickup that had extra tanks. Were talking about 700 miles!

CINDY! Next time your in Round Rock try either Gumbo's or the Louisiana Longhorn Cafe!

Danny- What a gorgeous, informative post! I spent a week in Austin, many years ago and fell in love with it. I need to get to see some other cities apart from stoppin in at airports.

I couldn't help noticing how vastly different your population is from New Mexico's. Such a contrast!

I hail from West Texas (or is that the Basin?) and will always be a Texas gal!  I'm still so proud of my "home", but now I've found a new home here and love it, too.  Fortunately I still make it back there quite a bit.  This is a beautiful post - makes me homesick:)
