Do you find this Hangman’s noose offensive? Many do.
Is it a part of Placerville history? Yes it is.
That is the controversy behind this dummy in the Hangman’s Noose. The background is very extensive but here are the main points behind this Historical Landmark no. 141. First let’s look at the official description of the landmark.
NO. 141 HANGMAN'S TREE
In the days of 1849, when this city was called Hangtown, vigilantes executed many men for various crimes. This was the site of Hay Yard, on which stood the 'Hangman's Tree.' The stump of the tree is under the building on which the plaque is placed. Location: 305 Main St. Placerville
Some of the facts:
The building is not the Historical Landmark, the tree under the building is.
The Hangman’s Tree Building was the location of a bar by that name. It is no longer in business, and the building in structurally weak.
The hangman dummy has been hanging there for many, many years. It is rumored to be the most photographed site in all of El Dorado County. Tourists come to see the hangman dummy.
It can be a startling sight to see for the first time; many find it insensitive and out dated in the community. The dummy is a life size manikin that looks “life-like”.
So what do you think about this hanging dummy? Do you find it offensive? Do you feel that it is a part of Placerville’s history? Can see it from my house, I don’t care?
I am with Dana up in 46. I like the history of the Sierra foothills and all the little towns like Placerville and Jackson. I am tired of PC. this is a tourist site and I think something the town should embrace. Or at least have the decency to let the people that own the building do what they want with private property.
Since writing this post, I have been contacted with numerous other similar public displays Lyn.
Gene, I think that it is private property, but others do have a voice in how it appears to others. Even my CC&R have a say about what I can do at my house.
Hi Tom - I've stopped in Placerville many, many times and have never been offended by any of Hangtown's reminders of what it once was. I say string up everyone who is opposed to the dummy ... JOKING!
I agree with John .... get over it. Many bad things have happened in this world and trying to erase the memory of them is what is wrong with this country. Face the facts, live with them and move on. I find nothing at all offensive about it and it cracks me up when people say "how do you explain it to children?" Have you seen the violent and horrific video games they play?
Bravo, hats off, kuddos, pats on the back and whatagals to Marine. She's nailed it! Get off of it. Get over it. Get on with it!.....................NEXT!!
Tom, I saw this for the first time a couple of weekends ago when we rode through downtown Placerville on our way up to Georgetown. It made me go, "Hmmm" so I'm glad to have found your post to know the history behind it. Didn't offend me, but I am very rarely offended. :)
Leilani, it is something that many people see but do not know the history of it. Glad that you got a chance to see the noose, and appreciate you thoughts on it here.
Tom, I just thought it was something that someone did along the same lines as the people who drive with a body part dangling from their tow hitch or something. Now that is just a little ridiculous...at least the Hangman's Noose is tied to history. Unintentional pun, how cool is that! :)
History is history. Placerville was once named Hangtown. I would be offended if they tried to rewrite history in order to fulfill some misguinded attempt at being politically correct!

It can be scary for someone to see for the first time Rachel, we see a lot of scary things everyday. Some of them we just get used to seeing.
IF that is what the city wants, maybe we should just accept it for what it is Tom.
There are many examples of similar events that are still noted publicly. Sometimes it can act as a reminder of our past John A.
We can not change the past, we have a choice as to how we remember it.
Thanks John M.

Hi Tom, I find an outdated method of punishment to be cruel and offensive.
Many feel the same way that you do Bob.
Thanks for the feedback.

That remark may cause controversy Cynthia. :)
Thanks for the feedback about Placerville, I guess we all have different feelings about these things.

There are a lot of differing opionions on how to show the past Marnie, thanks for your feedback.

How do you really feel John? :)
Thanks for the feedback.
Tom, Not sure I really understand the question.

I was being sarcastic, you made it clear how you really feel John.
