Renewing My Vows - The REALTORS Code of Ethics

oath

Today I will visit our local real estate board to renew my vow to adhere to the REALTORS Code of Ethics.  This training, which is required every four years, will review the 17 articles included in the Code.  Every REALTOR is required to commit to the Code of Ethics.

The REALTORS Code of Ethics states that we must protect and promote the best interests of our clients. We must cooperate with other REALTORS.  We must operate within the bounds of the Fair Housing laws.  We are required to disclose any information we know about a property.  We must also disclose how we get paid.  We agree to utilize mediation and arbitration when disputes arise.  The Code of Ethics reminds us that the exchange of real estate is serious business.

Did you know that not every real estate agent is a REALTOR?  The privilege of using the REALTOR title requires membership in the National Association of REALTORS and a commitment to the Code of Ethics.  Many real estate agents opt to not become REALTORS, either for financial reasons or because they do not see value in being a REALTOR.

Personally, I take pride in being able to call myself a REALTOR.  I heartily subscribe to the Code of Ethics.

Today I will renew my vows to serve as a professional REALTOR.

Hi Kathryn, The Realtor  Code of Ethics is so much a part of who we are as Realtors.

It holds us to a higher standard as "Realtors". Have a great day.

Good for you Kathryn, Have a great day and I agree that not everyone agent is a Realtor and more important few buyers or sellers know the difference...  They should give us a special license... don't you agree...

Irene:  I agree 100%. In an arena that involves significant legal and fiduciary duty, we should be held accountable to a higher body.

Richard and Beth:  A special license would be a distinct way to set ourselves apart.  I do agree - the general public has no idea about the difference between an agent and a REALTOR.

Kathryn- I agree, many really don't know that there is a distinction between a Realtor and agent.  Committing to honor the Code of Ethics is reason enough to choose to work with a Realtor.

I just took it online.

Learn a thing or two. I'd wish realtors take it every year. Really, some agents shall be reminded some very simple things...
