REALTOR on the move travels light with mobile devices and apps

What mobile device and application allow me to be on the go?

I like to travel light...so light that all I usually bring with me is a wallet-on-a-string and my smartphone (iPhone). Wallet on a string

Occasionally, I’ll bring my MacAir. I rarely bring my iPad since the MacAir is just as light and I can do a heck of a lot more with my computer. And if don’t worry about internet connection because I have a small wireless modem I use in such occasions (yep, the modem fits in my wallet-on-a-string)

But in my profession, can these really be enough?

Well....yes!

But I made several “adjustments”.

GMAIL Got tired of troubleshooting the synch function between my computer and my iPhone (and Droid before that). So I decided to chuck it all and use only gmail. I felt so liberated!

With gmail, when I make one change on one device, it shows up on the other devices without  connecting any devices. So all my emails, contacts, calendars are in synch on my phone, my laptop and my iphone. It’s like magic :)
iPhone

Smart and pretty with big screen and a visual keyboard that appears as needed. Easy access to the internet (Oh,I I changed carriers, too....have been with Sprint, then AT&T, and now with Verizon). Over 500,000 apps designed for it, and many of which are also on the iPad.

So I have access to my email/gmail, can view attachments (zoom in and out, natch!), forward emails with documents as needed. Texting is also a huge part of using the smart phone since many of my clients and associates prefer the quick and easy (silent and stealthy) method of communications.

Take pictures/videos...using an add-on wide-angle lens. So when I don't have my camera with me, my iPhone does the job. If they can make a movie using an iphone, I can surely take a simple picture. I hear that the camera feature for the next generation is even better. Can’t wait!

MacAir

Apple devices

Yes, I have an ipad. But with my MacAir being so small and light, it’s just as easy to take it with me instead of the iPad It has more functionality.

Getting internet connection is easy. I have a portable modem that can accommodate up to 5 wireless devices (phone, computer, etc) needing internet access.

Dropbox Instead of storing important documents on my hard drive, I learned my lesson and I’ve uploaded them all on Dropbox. I may change someday, but it’s great to have access to my files anywhere I am, as long as I have internet access.

Watch this video to see how it works
Docusign Electronic signatures make a huge difference in how we conduct business.

There’s faster signing regardless of where the parties are, as long as they have access to their email. And there’s less grousing about the mountains of paperwork once people get used to signing online by merely clicking here and there. Further, we have less physical paper when nearly all documents are pdfs and stored online.
MyFax And  for those who still want to do paperwork the old fashioned way with wet signatures and faxing, I ask them to fax the documents to me to my efax number. The documents, in turn, are converted to pdf and sent to my email. Ta daaa!
Mi-fi mifiSmall modem the size of a credit card connects up to five mobile devices (I can use with my iPhone, iPad or MacAir)

So why take the IPad when I can take my MacAir instead? Have you really seen how small, thin and light MacAir is? Here's a picture showing the ipad on top of the MacAir which is not that much bigger than the iPad and is nearly as thin. Happily, all my Apple mobile devices are sleek in design and style.

With these mobile devices and applications, being on the go has never been as easy, efficient and effective.

Ron --- even if I don't have my computer (or iPad), as long as I have my uber-smart iPhone, I'm good to go

Phil--- I fell in love with Apple a long time ago, but couldn't bring myself to switch to the Mac. Until I got my iPhone....

Tim -- How so very nice of you to say so. I'm very honored.

I'm a believer. But, just in case, I still have my Dell (it's been resurrected) which I use whenever I need to have two screens up at the same time to save time.

I love the way you laid this out.  Gave me an idea of how I can put what I use in a chart so that I remember and can easily share it with others.  Thanks,

Rosemary -- I like charts because I'm a very visual person and like to have things easily laid out for me where I can pick and choose what to focus on. Had I chosen to blog paragraph by paragraph, it may not have been interesting to me personally.

Good for you!  I'm afraid I function much the same way.  I however, did not have Docusign yet, and might not!    Todd Clark in his techy blog wrote about Agent Aid - much cheaper - go read his post about it!

Caron --- go for it.

Dagny --- I'm so used to Docusign that I'm fine with it. But I will look at the other one that Todd recommended

Hi Pacita,

Dropbox is very cool. And Dropbox is an excellent storage service.

For example, you can use Dropbox as a backup destination to backup all your data from other cloud services. For example, if you use Evernote and Google Docs, it might good to backup all notes and Google Docs documents to Dropbox.

So please check out cloudHQ (http://cloudHQ.net) - cloudHQ can backup and sync all your files from Google Docs, Evernote, SugarSync, Box, etc. to Dropbox - even Basecamp projects.

Senad --- as mentioned in my blog I am already using Dropbox. It's great.

Eileen --- getting to really love my MacAir. But it did take a while to get used to it. Now, I'm somewhat proficient.
