Quintessential Southern ... Wordless Wednesday

Does anything evoke the idea of “southern style” more than a Magnolia in full bloom? See a Magnolia brings to mind southern literature…To Kill a Mockingbird, Gone with the Wind, The Prince of Tides, Interview With a Vampire…you know, the classics.

This particular Magnolia was in an old cemetery close to downtown in Montgomery, Alabama which really reminded me that I was in the deep south. Old, old moss covered headstones and ancient trees with Spanish Moss draped about the limbs…quintessential southern.

You are welcome friend.  Can't wait until Leslie and I are on your "go to" list too!  I love magnolias too, very simple and the waxy texture is fascinating, seems so permanent.

Most people think we have just palm trees down here, but we have Magnolias too. Would that be considered a part of the deep south?

Hi Mona,

You are right, it really does represent all those fabulous books.  Wow, you reminded me of some of my old favorites, I may need to go dust them off and spend a relaxing few evenings with a book.

Hi Mona,  Love the picture of the magnolia!  I should probably be able to add a few "southern" movies... how about Steel Magnolias!

Hello Mona,

I have not seen a Magnolia in bloom since I was in Ashville in 1995.

Great way to start the day. Thanks for sharing the shot.

Best, Clint mcKie

I'd argue there isn't anything more southern as far as flowers go than a magnolia. My parents had one in their yard, my mema had one in hers, my aunt in hers as well. The smell is magnificant, albeit, they sure do make a mess!

I love love love magnolias and guess what - yep - they dont grow in Colorado.  Something about that low humidity and frost and snow and freezing cold.  Darn!

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the photo of the Magnolia and the southern thoughts that accompanied.  Sorry to respond so late, but that's how it goes sometimes in this business!  Thank you everyone.

Hi Mona, I used to think of the SouthEast as Magnolia country but seeing these stunning plants in so many areas of the US, It always facinates me how durable they are in the different climate zones they thrive in. Classic and beautiful photo.

Hi William, apparently not in Colorado though.  I need to keep posting photos for Belinda to see these southern beauties.

Great shot and great comparison to those movies... I love them all. You forgot "Steel Magnolias", though. Not as traditional, but one I still love.

#16, thanks for the comment.  We have a client who has successfully grown a banana plant here in the mountains...go figure!

Gretchen, Steel Magnolias may not be traditional but it sure is southern.
