THE WOODLANDS STORM OF JUNE 12, 2012

It was truly a very frightening experience yesterday in The Woodlands as we were hit with a major storm that just seemed to come out of nowhere! I was sitting in my office and noticed that the once sunny day was quickly turning dark. I got up to look out of the window because the clouds looks strange to me.

Literally within minutes, the wind became so strong that our trees were bending at an angle that I had not witnessed since Hurricane Ike in 2009. These were no mere wind gusts but straight-line winds that were continuing to get stronger by the minute. When the hail began is when I really knew that this was one of those scary, tornado producing storms!

I hunkered down staying away from the windows watching the lights flickering on and off. After a rough hour, the fury of the storm subsided a bit. I came out not knowing what to expect outside.

I knew that where I was, the structure was fine. Upon stepping outside, it looked like a war zone and completely flashed my mind back to seeing the devastation after Ike. Trees were down everywhere, the streets were littered with debris, sirens were blaring everywhere and it was eerily still in the air.

The news showed how two storm cells merged and created this huge monster storm. We just happened to be right in the middle of the red zone! I know that there have been some devastating storms these past few years all over the states. When you go through one, it almost seems unreal.

I am thankful that my home was spared but all over The Woodlands and Houston area, many did not fare as well. There were many house fires believed to be from lightning strike and many homes with huge trees through them. We will be seeing the clean-up for many days.

Wow, Paula, I had no idea you folks were hit so hard! As a weather geek, I also think that lightning photo is amazing, but not with everything else that accompanied it. Texas has always been a place where the weather pendulum swings pretty wide, but lately you guys have been getting both ends of extreme. Glad to hear your home is okay, and now I'm going to go check in on my friends down there and make sure they're okay! Hope the yard cleanup isn't a beast for you!

Paula,

Looks like you guys got some of the same lightning we had. I have been seeing tons of our farmers and ranchers our chainsawing all the blown down trees. Glad you are safe...

Paula -- Wow, that was some scary experience for you. To have a storm creep up on you like that and then be so furious is frightening.  I've had that happen. Glad you're ok and no one was hurt. Property can be fixed. That lightning picture is something else indeed.

Texas thunderstorms can certainly be frightening!  I lived about a mile off Galveston Bay when Ike came through in Septermer of 2008.  We were ordered to evacuate, and when we came home we were very glad we hadn't been in the house during the storm.  We had a good bit of damage to the roof resulting in a lot of water pouring in!

Wow, Kate you have seen the results of Ike for sure.  These storms that we had yesterday form so quickly that it takes people by surprise.  During this time of year we all must be vigilent in watching the weather so that we can be prepared.  My next post will be about storm preparedness.  So important.

I was caught in that storm as well.  Very frightening!  A transformer blew out on the 45 feeder road and sparks fell on my car.  I saw the roof of a storage shed from the Lowes blow off and land on the side of the road.  I pulled off the feeder in the Lowes parking lot and it started to flood.  What a storm!

Paula, glad you are okay.  I live in Village of Panther Creek and was dining at Pallotta's when the storm came through.  Glad to say we only lost a portion of our fence and had to retrieve our deck box from the street.

Jewel and Patti.  So glad you all came through this unscathed.  And yes David, those are just a few of the tons of pictures out there that tell about this story.  We are learning more and more about the damage that a lot of people sustained.  We are also hearing that the weather patterns today are creating another potential storm this afternoon.  We are all on alert.

So scary!  I was sitting at the office looking out the windows and couldn't believe it!  When I finally got home (Creekside), my son mentioned the electricity had been out for about 2 hours.  We waited another 2 hours for the lights to go back on (they didnt until 9:45) when finally I packed the hungry kids in the car, only to sit in Whataburger for 20 mins waiting for our food!

I didn't realize the extent of the damage it had done, just glad everyone is safe!

You are right Sharon.  Those kinds of storms are awesome yet very scary.  I am a bit of a weather buff yet this one scared the poo out of me for sure.  The skies are looking spooky again as the afternoon goes on.  Keeping a very close eye on the radar.  Happy for my weather app for sure.

Paula, sounds like we had a similar storm here.  I put on a rain slicker to get into my office (10' from my parking space).  It was thrashing.
