After six years of having two Jewish congregations in the Lake Norman area, the boards of  Lake Norman Jewish Congregation and Beth Shalom of Lake Norman have decided to merge into a single a congregation.

The merger reflects the community’s desire to be unified, pool resources and combine religious schools, the new organization said Monday in a press release.

It is estimated that the new congregation, under the direction of Rabbi Michael Shields, will have more than 175 families and look for a permanent home for worship, events and religious studies, the release said.

The transition to one congregation is expected to be complete later this summer, with the new congregation formally launching during the Jewish High Holidays this fall. lake_norman

The change will include developing a new name and branding, merging the governing boards, launching a combined religious school and Bnai Mitzvah program, and affiliating with the Union for Reformed Judaism, organizers said.
