Mohonk Mountain Gate House New Paltz NY Ulster County NY

Mohonk Mountain's Old Gatehouse in New Paltz NY is an impressive, beautiful structure with a lot of history behind it! The old gatehouse used to be the main entrance into Mohonk, where horse & carriages would pull up to gain entrance to the preserve. The gatehouse today is currently on private land and not open to visitors; but discussions are underway to perhaps incorporate the old gatehouse into the current Mohonk Mountain Preserve and open it up to the public. Located off of Rte 299 in the New Paltz NY area, the old gatehouse has access to the various carriage trails that wind through the preserve, eventually reaching the mountain house. Supporters of opening the gatehouse to the public envision a 2nd, main entrance to Mohonk from the Shawangunk Mountain Range side. Critics of the plan point to concerns over traffic and congestion on what is now a quiet, country road.

I believe that tower is privately held by the Mohonk Preserve.
