Are You Hanging Proudly? If you have an American Flag displayed in front of your home, are you hanging it proudly? The flag needs to be respected and treated according to the rules of the United States Flag Code. June 14, 2012 is Flag Day and a day designated to honor Our American Flag.American Flag are you hanging proudly

In Clarksville TN and other parts of the country, some homeowners display The Flag year-round. Others make it a ritual to display the American Flag only on National Holidays. Whichever you prefer, be sure to follow proper protocol and give the flag the respect it deserves.

Some quick reminders for Homeowners:

  1. Never let the flag touch the ground.
  2. Hang the flag with the blue square at the top corner never upside down unless in distress.
  3. Keep the flag clean and in good repair.
  4. The flag is to go up a sunrise and down at sunset.
  5. If you choose to display it at all times, the flag needs proper illumination for night-time hours.
  6. When the flag is worn and ready to be retired, the recommended disposal method is burning. In Clarksville TN, our local post of the VFW can give assistance in the proper disposal of the flag.

For a full Accounting of the American Flag Etiquette, contact the American Flag Foundation or other American Flag Authority.

Whatever you do, make sure that you are hanging proudly the symbol of The United States of America, the American Flag.

yes ours hangs while our sons are in the service, one army, one navy... and another alternative is to give it to the scouts, they have a ceremony for retiring flags correctly.

Mark, Good for you on your two sons. The scouts are wonderful and surely have a protocol in place to handle the flag's retirement.

You're not going to believe this but our HOA doesn't allow us to fly flags in the yard.  We had a neighbor that was military and they moved (I sold the home) due to him getting tickets for flying the American flag.  Most of us backed him but the HOA stood their ground.  I still get ticked thinking about that mess. We keep a small American flag on our front porch in a pot.

Unbelievable. No American Flags? I help set the rules for four HOA's and in our military town, the thought of not allowing them in people's yard would create a mutiny and get newspaper headlines. So sad.

Great info as I think few people realize these guidelines. My mother-in-law was just visiting... she and her husband are veterans and she commented on our neighbor's flag which he keeps up day and night, rain or shine. I certainly don't think he means any disrespect, afterall he's flying the flag because he loves it, but it's too bad more people don't realize these guidelines.

I get "goosey's" when I see the American Flag flown and hear the National Anthem. What a great combination. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Gretchen, I agree that people think they are doing things right so it really isn't out of disrespect but of ignorance. That is why I wrote this post to get the word out. My husband sells flags as one of the architectural products for his line of work and he educated me on the proper etiquette.
