To Asphalt or Concrete your Driveway in Ottawa

Homes in Ottawa typically have two types of driveways;  Asphalt or Concrete.  Having a well maintained driveway will make the entrance to your home seem well taken care of and enhance your curb appeal.  So... have you ever asked yourself To Asphalt or Concrete your Driveway in Ottawa?  Here are some factors to take into consideration as well as some clear benefits between the two types that may help you decide To Asphalt or Concrete your Driveway in Ottawa.

  • Cost: Asphalt is made primarily from petroleum, so it’s cost follows gas prices closely as they fluctuate up and down. Asphalt is typically less expensive than concrete however.
  • Maintenance: Asphalt driveways need to be resealed approximately 3 months after installation and every 2-3 years afterwards.  It takes about 2-3 days to dry and is relatively inexpensive.  Concrete doesn’t need to be sealed at all.
  • Appearance: Asphalt usually only comes in black.  Concrete can be made in many pleasing and custom made designs to match your home.
  • Life Expectancy: Asphalt has a life expectancy of 25-30 years and a well-built concrete driveway should last at minimum of 25-30 years or longer.

Is an Asphalt or Concrete Driveway better in Ottawa’s climate?  Asphalt will hold up well in cold climates and if a crack appears its easy and inexpensive to repair compared to a crack in concrete.  Warmer climates can soften asphalt and potentially cause dips if a vehicle is stationary for long periods of time, however; concrete won’t.  Concrete is also cooler to walk on than asphalt in the warmer temperatures.

Installation of Asphalt or Concrete driveways varies slightly. Asphalt and Concrete Driveways both need a solid foundation layer of crushed rock, and a layer of sand that starts a foot down below your driveway level.

Asphalt Driveways have the asphalt poured and compacted down on top of the crushed rock and sand foundation.  Concrete needs a form built on top of the crushed rock and sand, made up of reinforcing steel and then the concrete can be poured onto it.

To Asphalt or Concrete your Driveway in Ottawa? Every home can benefit from either type.  What kind did you choose for your home and what ultimately influenced your decision?
