Green Cay Wetlands---Who’s The Most Important Person There ?

Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach FL is one of Palm Beach County’s true treasures and a gift to the community.    On any morning you can find the boardwalk full of walkers and photographers, most of whom are regulars.   We walk the 1.5 mile loop 2,3, and sometimes much more than that not just for the exercise but for
the experience.

But there is someone very special at Green Cay who doesn’t go unnoticed... his name is Carlos Padilla.   With 1.5 miles of boardwalk and various members of God’s wonderful creatures flying and walking around, without Carlos our daily walks would not be as enjoyable.

Carlos is there bright and early, often as early as 7am to make sure the boardwalks are safe for walkers.   He hoses off the boardwalk and keeps the pathGreen Cay Wetlands free from limbs that want to extend their reach.

Early morning walkers greet Carlos as they begin their walks.  Want to know where the nests are?  Chances are you can ask him and he’ll point them out to you.

I was so busy on my hunt for alligator nests that were it not for Carlos I would have missed the Anhinga nests high in the tree on the little island off to the left.

We’re so lucky to be able to see wood storks, roseate spoonbills, and black-bellied whistling ducks flying overhead as well as raccoons, bobcats and otters.  There are cypress trees, fireflag, pickerel weed and of course lots of palms.

Beginning in late March if you really look, you might see a common Moorhen nest tucked away in the reeds;  look higher up... 3 to 5 feet and you could spot a red-winged blackbird nest.   And of course,  there are alligator nests.... look for a mound of dirt and grass not too far from the water.

Come out to Green Cay Wetlands and be sure to say “hello” to Carlos!

BARFF- I think Carlos sees much more than we do.

Gita- it's the best time.  The birds are just waking up and that' when you'll see the most activity.

Cindy- the almost closed the nature center last year due to budget issues but thank goodness we still have it.  Every day is a new day!

Michael- We've been walking there for over 4 years and still love it.

BarbaraT- still tracking down the gator nests here but there are 4 at Wakodahatchee.

Dorie- we have another incentive for getting out there early... the heat!!!  We love it and have learned so much about all of the different wildlife.

Janis- I hope we never take it for granted or Carlos either.  It could be a mine field without him.

Mike- I agree.  Maybe we should all look around more often and thank those who are there evry day for us.

John (QMan)- On days when we're out and complaining about the heat, he's out there.  Thank goodness.

Joanna- Oh gosh, we hope not.  Even the little babies born last year look like they could really bite!

Richard- thank you.  I love it and love that people are really using it.

Rob- Oh yes, we can always tell when the bobcats have been around.

Gary- I know the walkers appreciate him but we need to tell him more often.

Kathy, I love the post. I do not think I was out there on my visits to the area. I love these treasures in the local environment. Carlos probably does not know famous he is.

Richie- Hope you're getting set to have a special weekend.  Isn't it wonderful that there are so many special places for all of us to enjoy around our wonderful planet.

Mary- I think you said it ...'takes pride in what he does."

Debb- What I love hearing is all of the different people on the boardwalk who stop to say "hello" to Carlos.

Norma- you are so right.  It's a wonderful way to begin the day.  It's like taking a vitamin pill first thing in the morning.

Joan- thank you.  I love walking at Green Cay and seeing all of the different birds.

Donald- well if you're this way, just give me a jingle.  Coffee's on me!!!

Kristin- many thanks.  That was quite a surprise!

Brent- many thanks.  I've got to figure out how to get him a copy of this post.

Jan- you're right.  There are so many people who keep things running.  I love the fact that he notices what's going on with the birds and nests too.

Lou- Have you gotten out to Green Cay??

Alexandra- there are so many people who make it possible for us to enjoy what we do.  You made me think of a project I need to put together for him.

Sharon-I would love for everyone at ActiveRain to take an early morning walk with me on the Boardwalk!

Shar-He is very kind.  I had a bad upper respiratory ailment last year and he stopped to tell me what his home remedy was.

Janice- I bet.  I'll have to remember to send nice sunny photos to you in the winter.  (winter?  what's that?)
