Hartsdale NY Train StationWestchester County is served by three train lines:

  • The Hudson Line – (Green)  which hugs the Hudson River and stops in all the river towns such as Tarrytown, Irvington  and Dobbs Ferry.  
  • The Harlem Line (Blue) which goes straight down the middle of the county serving landlocked towns such as White Plains, Scarsdale and Bronxville.
  • The New Haven Line (Red) which serves the Sound Shore area including New Rochelle, Mamaroneck and Larchmont. 

 

These train lines transport commuters from all over the county to Grand Central Station in mid-town Manhattan.   The power of having a Metro-North stop in your home time is reflected in higher home prices, and a greater resilience to the housing recession.   The towns in lower Westchester with an easy commute, held up better than a town up-county with no train station.

The reason for this disparity is obvious.  With the rising cost of fuel and the heavy congestion on the roadways, having easy access to a Metro-North train station is an obvious plus.  Being able to easily hop a train certainly beats spending hours in traffic burning gasoline as well as your patience.  Also, even if the train station is geographically close by, if it is not located in the municipality in which you reside, parking permits can become problematic.

Hi Ruthmarie, Great post. Metro North is still planning a station on the upper west side of Manhattan one of these days. I can't wait. In the meantime I board the train at 125th Street to Westchester.

If I could only ride a train to work I would. Driving around gets old very quickly in our business. Texas is so big that our drive time between houses in different neighborhoods within the same town would scare you. One of our local towns in Collin County has 96 sq. miles.

Hi Janis - It really is if you are in a town where you can get a permit and hop on the train...its so much easier.

Hi Richie - There is something timeless about riding the train. Its something that's been around since the time our great, great, grandparents - or at least our great grandparents. But it still works. It's still effecient. Which is quite amazing. 

Hi Ed - Quite true. The New Haven Line goes into CT and is used beyond the Westchester border by many CT residents.

Hi Mitchell - I keep hearing about it, but WHEN will it ever happen?  We can't even seem to replace the TZ bridge and that's urgent. 

Hi Michael - The communities with long car commutes have really suffered during this recession.  One way to recession-proof your housing is to buy something more modest that has great commuting options.  It acts like a tonic on price depreciation. 

 

Hi Brent - A TOWN of 96 square miles??? Seriously??? The county seat of Westchester is White Plains it is a CITY of 10 square miles.  Villages are just a few square miles around here.  That's just amazing to me.  But the bulk of your city was built up in the 20th century and was designed to be car-dependent.  Towns in the north-east have been around since before the Revolution.  They were built with horses in mind!
