A Beer Bar! A Bike Shop! A Coffeehouse!
A year and a half ago, my client Evan Rau - a not-too-long-ago graduate of Colorado State University - talked to me about his dream. He wanted to open a combination bike shop/beer bar in Old Town Fort Collins, combining two things very much a big part of the local Fort Collins culture. After all, we are the Napa Valley of the craft beer movement, and Larimer County is ranked #3 nationally in bicycle participation.
Evan has worked hard to make his dream come true, and in November of last year, he and his partner Susan Dalke opened CranknStein in an old garage on College Ave, right in the heart of Fort Collins' historic Old Town district. Susan brought along her knowledge of coffee roasting, and a coffeehouse was added to the concept.
And what a nice job they have done! The front of Cranknstein is dedicated to a large comfortable bar and coffeehouse, serving a constantly changing variety of local, regional and imported beers, as well as great in-house roasted coffee. The sofas, overstuffed arm-chairs, and nice bar stools provide a great place to enjoy live music every Tuesday night, or just sit with friends and have a cold brew. In the back, Evan runs the bike shop, with specializes in vintage and custom bikes, but also provides full repair and tune-up service, and Susan operates the coffee roaster.
It may sound strange at first, but it works - it really is a unique blend of what makes Fort Collins special, and Evan tells me they're doing really well. So hop on your bike and pedal down to Cranknstein in Old Town Fort Collins for some morning java, a late afternoon beer or some some evening music - and remember: Ride Responsibly!
