Have you noticed how all of the animal species (and people included) compete to be number one?
The squirrels in our yard provided us with this visual today as they continually changed positions on their favorite feeder.
One squirrel was dominating the space. There was plenty of area for two to enjoy adequate room but that was clearly not allowable.
Most of the Real Estate offices I have been affiliated with over the past 34 years are similar.
There is always one or two agents who dominate the office. Sometimes it is because they are really good. Sometimes it is because of seniority and sometimes they are just well politically connected and sometimes they are just aggressive and obnoxious.
Years ago we worked in an office where everyone was given equal access to the calls that came in via a secretary who answered all the calls.
Opportunity was indeed evenly dispursed.
One day a friend called in with a referral for us. Strangely she ended up talking to another agent. He informed her that we were not doing Real Estate anymore.
When she called on my cell to see what was up, the agents lie was exposed.
It happens. Our industry is largely full of extremely caring and professional agents.
In markets where the pickings are slim, we all need to be vigilant to be sure that office policies are upheld.
Squirrels are fun to watch. I doubt that they would be fun to work with.

25 Comments on Jockey for position....
Hi Jeanne, Yikes ! That agent clearly crossed the line in exagerating the reports of your untimely demise !
Good observation and you're right nature has a way of showing us all about life . . . we all try to jockey for position in one way or the other.
I guess all God's creatures have a competitive side... Thanks for posting have a great weekend
I hope those guys ended up feeding nuts to squirrels for a living
I love it :) Congrats on the Feature my friends ~
I never have and never will work in an office with squirrelly agents jockeying for position. And I never took floor calls. I want listings.
Ouch and how embarrassing for that agent who was caught lying! Hope he learned a lesson he never forgets. Tell the truth!

Jeanne and Ralph - I would be beyond irritated if someone did this which is why all of my clients have my cell.
Personally, I believe that one can be competetive without having to resort to lying. Doing something wrong in order to do something right is always wrong. ☺ No robbing from the rich to feed the poor.
Jenne & Ralph, there is something to be competitive but the go to blatant falsehoods is despicable hope she will fail soon...
Your post reminded me of some stories of mortgage companies (especially the big box banks) where I used to work. After I left, my clients would call looking for me and they were told such stories including that I was in jail, left the business and that I was even dead. There is no shortage of sleeze in our business.
Man, you took my thunder. I was going to blog about this, now I will wait. This just happened to a Broker friend of mine, who left her office, and her mom's friend called. Another agent told her mom's friend that she had died. The mom's friend called the mom, and got the Broker's cell number. Some people are just ugly. Unfortunately she could not get a name.
Yes, I have noticed that competition. For awhile I had 3 cats. One cat was an absolute hog, and would hover over the bowl in a position to keep the other cats out. Another of the cats would sit their and complain about it. BUT, my amazing black cat, Sabu, who was largest of them all, would sit quietly and wait for the hog to have his fill. After awhile, when Sabu thought enough was enough, he would gently place his paw on top of the head of the hog. Even in competition for food, some souls have manners and class:-)
I should also mention that Sabu actually taught himself to use the toilet. He'd even tried flushing, but wasn't strong enough to work the handle. Sabu lived to be 19 years old, and was the most amazing animal I ever knew!
There are always real estate agents that will try to pull others down to their level.
Have a great day and an outstanding weekend.
I compete with anyone but I'm fair. . .if you are not competitive in this business..you are a hungry Realtor.
Being an Alpha agent inside an office is not bad. .really,. . you get all the referrals
I left a big agency last year because of favoritism I witnessed from the team leader. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I avoid all that now by not going into my office. I work from my home office 100% of the time. I don't even go to my office to meet clients. I usually meet them at a Panera or Starbucks close to the neighborhood of interest. Too bad really.
Great observation. I used to be in an office that had "the board" where everyone's production notice was posted. Needless to say there was some bad business practices, leads disappearing etc.
Water seeks its own levels...I will say this...some agents want things handed to them and others are willing to meet success while its on the way...the ones that succeed are usually judged harshly for it....Business waits for no one...
Learned that lesson a long time ago. Always control your phone number. Makes you laugh about the Code of Ethics.
Hi friends.
Between the cats, the squirrels and the birds...
The food that I put in my backyard is eaten quickly.
