How to sell yourself and save the world

Tonight I attended the Park City Business Women's  Network first meeting of the year.  As part of the agenda,  some Life Coaches, who where really excellent speakers, talked about the 30 second introduction that turns heads.

  1. Who are you?
  2. What do you do?
  3. What can you offer others?
  4. What are some examples of what you have done?

So about 35 of us scribbled a few notes as other people were taking their turns going through the exercise.   There really were some nice introductions.  (I'll probably be poor by the time I invest money in all of those that impressed me.)   People from all walks of life, dieticians, lawyers, jewelry designers, volunteered their information.

AND THEN

15 minutes into the exercise , the person from our recycle center stood up, and humbly proclaimed

  1.  her name,
  2.  she worked at the recycle center
  3.  her offer to others was a soft pitch, "I'm here to save the world."  (Let me tell you that got some attention)
  4.  her example was that because of her efforts, Park City, Utah recycled 1000 pounds of usable material every month.

Nope she didn't even have a business card.  But she really is saving her world.

That's a great exercise to brainstorm and find points of differentiation between you and your competitors. I'll have to think about how I can apply this to real estate.

Renee:  Very stimulating thought.  Guess the question could be: who am I today?  That requires alot of thought.  Wife, Mom, salesman, etc.  As John mentioned, how to apply this to real estate?

John and Joan, thanks for the comments.

This recycle lady just inspired me (Save the World part), but in terms of the exercise,  since I attended this meeting and practiced the 30 second pitch:  heres who I am speech, I've attended open houses - I've gone to a dinner party, it has just really helped me walk up to people I don't know with confidence to introduce myself and go with the conversation.  So I think this would apply in real estate or any environment.   It is interesting when I attend Open Houses as a Loan Officer to see how the agents showing the house act.  Alot of them use this type of method - walk up with a friendly handshake, a smile and genuine introduction.  These make me feel the warm fuzzies.  This is the Realtor I want when I sell my house.  Others just say hi and wait for me to introduce myself.   Big difference in how I feel when I walk through those houses, whether its ok for me to linger, or if I should "Get out of Dodge."
