Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a non-profit organization with a mission to restore and preserve our marine environment through leadership in education, research, and the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine life. National fame came to the Aquarium with the release of the movie Dolphin Tale, inspired by the true story of Winter, a young dolphin who was rescued off the Florida coast after becoming entangled in a crab trap line. Winter lost her tail and was delivered to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The aquarium staff worked diligently to save Winter's life and assist in her rehabilitation.
Obviously Winter is a star attraction as she is put through her training along with her older co-star dolphin, Panama. The aquarium routinely has other marine life in residence who are also being cared for. There is a daily schedule in which the various animals can be observed during their rehabilitation programs. The programs are very educational and entertaining. Besides the dolphin areas, there are areas to observe sharks, pelicans, sea turtles, otters, stingrays and a large aquarium filled with a variety of fish.
CMA also offers a variety of other activities such as the sea safari, kayak adventures, behind the scene tours of the animal hospital.
