Heads Up, Another RENTAL Scam Alert!
On Friday I posted   a listing for a rental on Craigslist and Trulia and again on AR yesterday. Fortunately I signed a lease with a client yesterday but immediately afterwards I received this response. Her response came in as a lead referral from another blogging platform.
 
She was inquiring about the rental and when I replied that I had already leased the property but would be happy to help her find something this was the response I recieved. There's so many scams out there nowadays and they can hit you in so many ways. I'm sure we've all received these same desparate messages via email but recieveing one like this through a rental ad is a first for me. Please feel free to pass this along.

John,  I am not sure why these folks pry so hard on craigslist.  We owned a home in Greeley Colorado for my boys college.  We needed another renter in one room, and got loads of emails from the UK.... all saying they have ALWAYS wanted to come to Greeley... Just cash the check, keep some and mail the rest back...  REALLY GREELEY COLORADO???  It is a nice town, but not thinking to many folks dream about coming to this small farm town, in Northern Colorado.  Have a great day!

Doris & Sharon: Craigslist has always worked very well for me and I continue to use it albeit I am very careful and always keep my eyes open for scams like this. That stated, this did not come from Craigslist. It came from another RE blogging platform which I won't name for obvious reasons. I too recieve emais like this on a regular basis but never have I received one like this on an ad.

Joan: One of the best family trips we ever had was to Greeley. We had an Amtrack adventere there to see our old babysitter graduate from UNC. It was truly one of the best vacations ever. Carol, granted Craigslist is smitten with rental scams and every other scam known to man. That stated I have to say that it's still the best venue I've ever used for rental properties and offing crap that I wouldn't donate to the Boys & Girls Club. You just need to know how to identify and deal with them.

Gabe, I have used it for years with huge success. In fact I've got several ads posted right now. I just think we as RE professionals need to apprise unwary folks about these types of scams.

We need stricter laws on fraud, my theory has always been STOP a shop lifter and stop the major crimes they commit later. A small crime undeterred creates a bigger crime. Cut their hands off when shop lifting and they want be able to hold a gun later to rob or kill someone.

John, it's so funny that the people sending them think whomever receiving them will fall for the letters... It's unfortunate Craigslist can't be more like AR and control that kind of crap! I even had someone send a come on letter to me via Linked in. Who are these people?!?
