104 In the Shade - One way to beat the Stanislaus County Heat!!
Stanislaus County is know for its warm (ok, HOT) summers. While the calender says it is still spring this past weekend was definitely summer weather. With the high temperatures in Stanislaus County passing the triple digits it was time to do something about the heat. There are many lakes and rivers in the area where people can cool off and lots of people have a pool. But our choice this weekend was to head west. Directly west from Stanislaus County is the beautiful Pacific Ocean.
The spot we picked this day was Half Moon Bay just about 30 miles south of San Francisco. It looked like a lot of other Central Valley residents had the same idea. The west bound traffic was pretty heavy. Our usual trip of just a bit over two hours was closer to three hours on this day.
We did a little bit of walking on the beach in Half Moon Bay then decided to head south a bit. Our destination was Pescadero Ca. This tiny little town about 2 miles inland is a popular tourist destination. One of their most famous attractions is Duarte's Tavern a restaurant that has been featured on the Food Networks Diners, Drive Ins and Dives.
Before we got there though we stopped at Pescadero State Beach for a while. It's hard to believe that just a short trip would make such a huge difference in the weather. While it was 104 degrees in Stanislaus County we were enjoying 60 degree weather on the beach at Pescadero. After enjoying the beach we took the quick trip to Duarte's for a bowl of their Creamed Green Chile Soup and a cold beer.
People that have never been to this part of California don't realize how diverse it is here. We have the wide open spaces of the Central Valley (which includes Stanislaus County), the world famous wine country of the Napa Valley, San Francisco and the Silicon Valley, some great beaches from San Francisco down to Santa Cruz and Monterey and to the east the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite. All of these places are a very easy drive from Stanislaus County.
I've said it and written about it before but this is why I love living here in Stanislaus County. Because even with the heat in the summer time a cool relaxing day is just a short drive away.

We don't see triple digit temts to often here in MA and that is fine by me. This week we will reach the upper 90's and that is going to be hot for us. I don't know if I could live in a place that has consistant 100+ temps. But as long as you cool down I guess it is doable.
Good morning Jim. Your pictures are incredible and beautiful. I'm closing on a home in western Massachusetts on Thursday. I'm moving north because I don't deal well with the heat. Weather forecast for Thursday in MA, is 103.
The ocean remains earths most unique calling card in our solar system....It speaks if you listen. As to weather, we complain no matter what it does....
Great post which highlights something that many of us Californians get to experience. In fact, here in Marin County, it can be 90 degrees in Mill Valley, and just over the hill and down at Stinson Beach (7 miles as the crow flies), it can be 30 degrees cooler, no problem.
Now, good luck finding a parking spot at the beach on those days, but that's a different story....
Gorgeous photos, Jim. You really captured the feel of the San Mateo Coast. It's incredible that we can have a 30° difference in temperatures an hour's drive.

The Bay area is such a beautiful and fascinating area. Need to do another trip out there!
Sharon
Rob - No ocean in Kansas?
Kathy - Thanks for reading.
Joan - The drive down the coast from San Francisco to HMB is pretty nice too.
Sharon - It is a beautiful part of the world.
Sounds nice, it was 110 here today in Phoenix area!
Hi Mike. I was there last month, my daughter lives in Scotsdale. It was hot then.
Jim, when I saw your photo of the Pescadero sign, all I could think about is artichokes, artichokes, artichokes! :)
Leilani
Leilani - They do grow a few around there. And Duarte's makes a pretty good artichoke soup.
That's the beauty of California. If it is too hot inland, one can always head for the coast.
Hi Jim,
Our weather in Seattle yesterday?
60- degrees and raining!
Phil

We had a very hot May here in GA but June has been rekativeky mild, with pleasantly cool nights.

Jim, Nice to have the option to leave the heat behind! Rugged coastline there, love your photos to illustrate your trip.
Jim, the California heat wave is working its way here on the East Coast. We're in for a hot one today.

Yikes. 104 is HOT. It's supposed to be 95 + here in Fort Wayne today. I'm staying inside.

Hi Jim, great post. Living by the ocean too , we sometimes take it for granted. Loved the video, felt like I was right there.

Jim ~ Beautiful beautiful photographs!
Gary - So true.
Phil - The only time I have been in Seattle I was there for a week and it was in the 80's , sunny and beautiful.
Dominic - At least it's a dry heat here, like that will make 104 more bearable.
Richard - When we get real hot here it will still be warm in the evenings. That's why we all have air conditioning.
Sheila - That's pretty darn hot too.
Liz & Bill - thanks for the compliments. I love this part of the coast.
Michael - Stay cool my friend.
Richie - everyone complains about the weather but nobody does anything about it.
Christiansen team - Stay inside with the AC, that's a good plan.
Rob - It is amazing how a drive of a few miles can make a huge difference. I understand about the parking too.
Sandy - Glad you enjoyed the video.
Lottie - I love the San Mateo coast. It's the perfect escape from our heat.
Jeffrey - Thank you.
