National Martini Day- June 19-Celebrate the Day!

National Martini Day-Shaken not StirredNow I’m not advocating going overboard in celebrating this day,  but if you were going to celebrate a day that includes olives, adult libation AND James Bond.... well this is the day!

No one knows the genesis of this day but I wouldn’t be surprised if  it was fully supported and cheered on by certain liquor companies.  However it matters not why we celebrate the day..... what matters most is.........

Shaken or Stirred???

The classic Martini is made of Gin and Vermouth and stirred not shaken.  An olive usually tops it (I prefer 2 or 3 on the very rare occasion that I do indulge) although some are topped with a sliver of lemon peel.

However, as popularized by none other than oo7 aka James Bond, some prefer their Martini...shaken, not stirred.

Served in a chilled glass without ice, it is as H.L. Mencken called it “
the only National Martini DayAmerican invention as perfect as the sonnet.”

And to whom do we owe praise for the invention of this drink?   It is said that during the days of the Gold Rush out west, somewhere around 1849, a miner who had hit pay dirt went into town (Martinez) and asked for champagne to celebrate his good fortune.   The bartender did not have any champagne but offered him a drink that he said was even better.  It was called the Martinez special.

When the miner traveled to another town he asked the bartender there for a Martinez special.  When the bartender did not know of such a drink, the miner told him how to make it- 1 part dry Sauterne wine to 3 parts Gin; stirred with ice then strained.  Over the years the Martinez Special became the
Martini!

Some of you may prefer Vodka in your cocktail, which would be known as a Vodkatini or not content to leave well enough alone other mix-masters have concocted the Appletini, the Pomegranate Martini and many many more.

S0 Martini lovers.... Today’s Your Day!

Celebrate the Day!

This one’s for you BARFF!
