Scott Smith and his wife Denise Smith bought the 9,000 sq. ft. Chateau Lyon mansion on Lake Norman for $4.4 million, the highest priced sale in the Charlotte area since 2009. They gave a tour on Thursday, May 31, 2012 and pose for a portrait in the foyer of their home. The Smiths own Morris Costumes in Charlotte. Not only had the price dropped from the original $25 million asked for at auction, Scott Smith said, Chateau Lyon came fully furnished with one-of-a-kind pieces from France. ÒThe only thing missing was a microwave,Ó he said. The homeÕs 1 1/2 acres have 500 feet of shoreline, and the lake can be seen from every window of the home, he said. ÒItÕs just gorgeous, and I felt I could work out the price with the bank,Ó Scott Smith said. The Smiths have owned a home on the lake since 1983, but not like Chateau Lyon in the gated Alexander Island community off Langtree Road. Their primary residence has always been in Charlotte. But at age 53, Scott Smith said, he realizes Òhow short life is.Ó And if so, he decided, ÒIÕm going to move back to Lake Norman.Ó Just two minutes from Interstate 77 Exit 31 in southern Iredell County, the home is an easy commute to Charlotte, he said. ÒI closed on May 18 and moved in that night,Ó he said. His wife and their two teenage daughters continue to live in Charlotte but will also move to Chateau Lyon. Its grand foyer features a limestone fountain hand-carved in France. The half-bath to the right of the foyer has a sink that was converted from a black marble fountain found in Paris. The home has five bedrooms, six full baths and three half-baths. Its bronze bay windows replicate those adorning Hotel Le Meurice in Paris.
