“Why don’t you initiate the three-way call at 6:00?” to which I
replied with a silent gulp, “Sure!”. Conference calls have always been a mystery to me. Clients who were in different places have initiated the calls TO me and I’ve always thought, “How Awesome!” and wished I’d had advanced techie skills like that. Well, it is awesome and now I’ve taken the mystery out of three way calling for myself.
6:30 AM today had me googling how to make a 3 way phone call. For one thing, I started by creating an account with Verizon for my 3 year old phone service. Who knew? Now I can tap into the rest of the mysteries of my phone…and the service has been there for me all along!
Turns out that getting charged air time for the call isn’t as scary as it sounds. It just means you use up minutes but there’s no extra fee unless you are over your minutes. It was so simple to make the call, I’m almost embarrassed, but not quite.
Leslie and my mother agreed to help out for the “dry” run. Don’t laugh but I printed out the directions. Simple, simple, simple. While on the phone with one party, you simply dial the 10 digit phone number for your second party and hit “send”. The first party is put on hold until the second party answers. Shazaam, three parties talking all together.
Turns out that the parties I’d gotten the correspondence course for telephone higher education wouldn’t be available when I could be in an area for good cell phone service so we’ll see each other in person this weekend. Still, it’s good to always improve your skill sets.
So, the moral of the story is don’t be afraid to try something new. It’s a fabulous age we live in when you can type just about any question into your computer and get an answer, often it is even the right answer.
One day soon I’m going to surprise two AR members and introduce them by phone. I’d hate to have taken the mystery out of doing the 3 way phone calls and not put it into practice!

Yea, I think I'm going to do this for the hell of it to surprise the other party and get a laugh...
LOL this post is killin me. Partly because I feel your pain and partly because you are so right. Dont be afraid to step outside the comfort zone. You might be amazed at what you will find
Thanks, Mona - I have never tried 3 way calling - will see if it works for me.
Hate to admit it my friend, but I've never tried three way calling either...............been on many three way calls but never initiated one of them.
David! If I didn't know better I would think you are teasing me for my naivete. Wait, I don't know you better...hey! lol No doubt you lender dudes use three way calling all the time, husband is in one place and wife is in another...chances of getting both in the same place at the same time during business hours are slim to none.
William, ever the diplomatic gentleman. David, see? This is how someone really teases ;-D
Thank you Virginia, I knew I couldn't be the only one without that knowledge.
Roger, now your skill sets have improved today too. Next time your resolve weakens on the coughin' nail challenge, you can dial two of your BARFFs at one time for qualified support.
Winston, I was thinking about doing that too! I've got to be careful though because with some of my friends all of the minutes would disappear quickly!
Mona ~ Three way calling can be a challenge at times... but glad you were able to do it. The cells phones these days have a mind of their own. My daughters phone went green the other day.. with NO explanation. It still worked, but EVERYTHING was green.. hmmmm. Good luck with all those three way calls! and yes.. experimenting with something new is a good way of thinking!
Janis, well I guess green in an electronic device is a good thing, right? Although I can imagine the frustration and I agree with you that those things have a mind of their own!
Allen, I guess with my new found Verizon access I may just have to find that out. I am with you my friend, so jealous of the people who can look up a phone number without hanging up and calling back. Who knows, I might have to join the Tech Group on AR and blog about this later!
Good morning Mona. I don't do the three way call either. Soooooo funny. I've been on these calls but never initiated them. I'm an old fashioned gal, I still like my tethered home phone.
Sheila, you are funny. I hope the home phone is at least hands free, lol.
That was very brave to write up what so many people were already thinking - they don't know how to do it either. Me, neither.
Jill, thanks. If I took enough courage to blog about what I don't know, I'd never run out of blog ideas! Hope the info helped.
