Whether it’s a part of your summer adventure or the focus of your relocation, Northern Virginia offers something for everyone. Situated at the heart of the nation and surrounded by a landscape studded with history, art, and culture, the region is within easy reach of Washington, DC both by car and public transportation.

History comes alive in Northern Virginia. Enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at how food moved from farm to table during the Revolutionary War era with the Hoecakes and Hospitality experience at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, or visit the estate’s working blacksmith shop, gristmill, and distillery, as well as its 4-acre demonstration farm. Download a copy of Fairfax County’s Civil War Guide brochure and follow the progress of the conflict as it crisscrossed the region.

Northern Virginia is also home to a vibrant arts community. Wolf Trap is America’s National Park for the Performing Arts, and highlights a wide variety of artists all summer long including popular, classical, and operatic performances as well as events especially designed for children. The Workhouse Arts Center is housed in the former Lorton Workhouse established by Theodore Roosevelt as part of the Progressive-era reforms, and combines both visual and performing arts as well as educational opportunities, and even a weekly Farmers Market.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, near Dulles International Airport, is a companion facility for the National Air and Space Museum located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.  It displays thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including the Space Shuttle Discovery, an IMAX theatre, flight simulators, and an observation tower from which to watch the air traffic at Dulles.

In addition, more than 30,000 acres of dedicated state, county, and national parkland throughout the region offer golf courses, trails, pools, boating, fishing, nature centers, ball fields, and gardens to fully enjoy the lush Northern Virginia environment. The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority is a good place to start an outdoor adventure.
