This is the season for summer vacations, and the time that an alarm will surely be activated in a home.
Our neighborhood recently had an incident where a home alarm went off continually for 2 days.
The nearby neighbors had concerns that:
- The homeowners were in trouble.
- No one knew how to contact them if they were out of town.
- That neither their alarm company, nor the police, were coming by to check on the home.
- The alarm system was not registered for a license as it was supposed to be, and thus able to be monitored.
- That the homeowner was going to be greatly embarrassed when they returned home and discovered the commotion while they were gone!
The residents in homes close by had to check into a hotel to get some sleep. After their worry subsided, then irritation started.
Some helpful hints if you have a home alarm system:
- Make sure it is registered with your local authority, if required by city codes, to have a license.
- Make sure your neighbors know when you are out of town, so that they can call the police if the alarm goes off.
- Give a couple of neighbors your contact information: cell phone numbers, work numbers, and relatives' phone numbers. Update the info from time to time.

The fines for non-compliance are also listed.
In 2011, we understand, our Nashville TN Metro Police department responded to 3,352 false alarm calls resulting in the issuance of 533 citations (410 for no alarm permit). This is a waste of valuable police-power.
