The American Public Transportation Association has declared June 21st ‘National Dump the Pump Day’!  Dump the pump day started in 2006 when gas prices were over $3 per gallon.  A day created to encourage people to use public transportation and save money.

Are high gas prices breaking you?  Sick of the rising prices?  Although gas prices aren’t as high as they were a few years ago, it is still depressing to drop over fifty dollars each time I need to fill up.  I remember when gas was less than fifty cents a gallon.  During this economic hardship it seems we are all trying to pinch pennies any way we can.  When I stumbled across information on Dump the Pump day it got me thinking.

I hate to pay the high prices, but I haven’t drastically made any changes to my daily transportation schedule. If I did how much could I save?  Does the local public transit provide transportation to all the places I need to go in a day?  Is it worth it?  I decided to do a little research, below are a few of the interesting facts I learned.

The latest APTA Transit Savings Report shows that a two person household that downsizes to one car can save about $10,000 a year on average.

Every $1 billion invested in public transportation creates and supports 36,000 jobs.

Public transportation use in the United States saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually.

In 2011, Americans took 10.4 billion trips on public transportation.

So…I am anxious to hear, have you switched to public transportation, started car pooling, downsized…??? If so, what are the pros and cons?

St. Joseph Transit, along with transit agencies nationwide will provide everyone free rides to all tomorrow (6/21/12).  Join in on the fun!

Love the post - as an environmentally minded person. Posts like th is bring awareness. I work from my home office, so I don't need to drive a lot anyway, but am aware of combining trips for instance to save on gas and the eco system. What I do wish we had in Northern Ky and Cincinnati is mass transit so getting around would be easier and make sense. We have buses in KY and Cincy has buses, but getting anywhere but downtown is not easy. We could use more public transit in the form of rail for sure.

D.A. Griffin, maybe with gas continuing on the upward swing, cities will improve their transit system.  Since you work from home mostly you not only save on gas, but clothing and other costs associated with "going to work"  Have a great weekend!

Terrie:  We have one of the best transit systems across the country, we even have the option of calling for a individual pickup as close as they can get to your residence.  In your job and mine, not for sure the transit would work very well but maybe we should give it a try:) lol
