Mummies of the World at MOSI in Tampa-Florida Only Through June 30
We went to see the Mummies of the World exhibit at MOSI in Tampa Florida a couple of weeks back. The exhibit is fantastic but sadly they wouldn’t let us take pictures-my poor camera was very upset. The exhibit will only be at MOSI through June 30 so get your tickets soon. For more information and ticket purchasing; www.mummiesoftheworld.com
You might be interested in this video of the Detmold Child. The South American mummy is 6,500 years old which makes it 1,000 years older than any currently known Egyptian mummies. The baby was 10 months old at death and CT scans have shown a heart defect although it isn’t known for sure what the cause of death was. 20 Human mummies were found in the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim, Germany; several are on display in the exhibit. These nature-aided mummies dated from the 1800’s when the town they lived in was ravaged by TB - 60% of the town’s population died of the disease. The mummie's TB bacterium are aiding modern research into TB because it is still viable. TB kills over 3 million people in the world each year and is making a drug-resistant come back even in the U.S: this is a great aid to TB research.
If the exhibit comes to your area, take the time to go see it. I learned so much about ancient and not-so ancient mummies and how they can help with modern day research. The atmosphere is one of reverence and respect and is just amazing.
