Travelers Championship Starts Today in Cromwell CT

Connecticut is the Center of the PGA Universe for This Week, as the first round of the Travelers Championship begins Bright and early on Thursday and the winner will be crowned sometime around 5:50 PM Sunday.

This PGA tour stop celebrates its 60th year this year and has another stellar field all trying for the $1,000,000 first prize. Many golf legends have participated and won this event, which was originally known as the Insurance City Open recognizing the Hartford CT as being home to many of the large insurance companies.

Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Tommy Bolt, Bob Goalby, Billy Casper, , Ken Venturi, Mick Price, Charlie Sifford, Greg Norman, Phil Michelson, Lee Trevino to name a few. A hall of fame collection of golfers have all spent time walking the fairways in Central CT.

This year’s field starts with the winner of the US Open last week, Webb Simpson and current Masters Champion Bubba Watson. Last year’s winner, Freddie Jacobsen will also be here to defend his title.

We have had dry weather so those long fairways will be firm and the ball will roll. At 6,841 yards, it’s not the longest course on tour, but with tight fairways, and high rough, it can get tricky.

The TPC Course in Cromwell, also known as River Highlands as it overlooks the Connecticut River is a stadium golf layout so there are many great places to sit and watch the players pass. The 3 holes around the lake on the back side are always crowded, as from the hillside one can see the green for hole #15, the par 3 16th hole, and the 17th hole with the second shots across water and a landing area surrounded by traps.

For people that are looking for a great opportunity, pick up a copy of the Hartford Courant on Friday, and get a free pass for the day at the Traveler’s Championship.

There will be plenty of parking, plenty of great shots to see and activity areas for a break from the action.

Come out to see the pros, support the tournament and help the local charities that all benefit from the tournament proceeds.

Ed, the real golf started today, but they have had lots of great events going on there since last week.  The golfers are happy that the weather got hot because the ball travels further, but it is a little to hot for me, I will watch it on TV ......... LOL
