Men are moving into the “Pink Labor” Occupations

Male in Pink Labor force

Men are starting to move into the “Pink Collar” job which is jobs that used to be dominated by females. Since 2010, there has been an increase in following jobs and in some professions the rates have almost doubled:

Nurses

Physical Therapists

 School Teachers

 Dental Hygienists

 Bank Tellers

 Receptionists/ Clerical

 Waiters/ Restaurant Jobs

Male in Pink Labor forceTypically male dominated jobs in the construction field have dried up since the housing market crunch which forced males to look for alternative occupations in the “Pink”.  Men have found these jobs more stimulating as well.

Male in Pink Labor forceGoals have changed over the past 5 years also. Men typically grew up thinking they would become rich and buy mansions and luxury cars but later found these goals were unrealistic. They now value the idea of buying an average home, having a moderate car for transportation and just being able to live comfortably vs. being rich. The idea of having a stable job with good income is important and rewarding and most important obtainable.

Male in Pink Labor forceBoys grew up being told they would grow up and become a Doctor, Dentist, Engineer, Lawyer, Police Officer, Fireman, Military Career or Construction worker. These were occupations primarily dominated by males. Girls grew up being told they could be Teachers, Nurses, Day-Care Providers or Stay at Home Moms. But we have seen a shift over the past 20 years and there has been a large influx on women going into the male dominated jobs and males going into the female dominated jobs.

The idea of Home Ownership is still a strong value among men and women and is still typically known as the “American Dream” and both males and females strive to meet this goal by finding new occupations that are more rewarding and stable in the work force by crossing over sex gendered occupations as gender stereotypes are collapsing.

Comment by author: I am in a real estate field which seem to a pretty even mixture of men and women. Service providers are also a mixture; Title and Escrow, Lenders, Insurance. I do believe there are females in construction/ home inspection occupations but think that males still dominate these fields at this time. Males tend to dominate the Pest Eradication fields but maybe women are not interested in working around bugs.

Interesting finding: I went on numerous websites and all the nursing programs had pictures of women. I only found 1 male picture in all my searching. Have the vocational schools caught up yet?

The times are changing, it's nice to see a more diversified workforce, rather than letting stereotypes determine future occupations it's great when people can do what makes them happy. Awesome post Kristin!

Hi John,

Absolutely and having a fun and rewarding career. I think the numbers are going to increase. Some professors seem to think when the market stabilizes in a few years, it will go back to the way it was but I do not agree.

Hi Eric,

I totally agree and our country has changed so much in the past 50 years. I do not think women will go back to being homemakers exclusively like they did after WWll and men will not give up these new found stimulatiing jobs. Hopefully we will raise our children to tell them they can be anything they want to be. Perhaps we will  have a female president someday?

Hi Eric,

I usually vote Republican but I totally agree. I think she gets along with everyone across the world and is very smart. And Bill would be first lady! What a kick that would be. Hey, this is a good point for my post. Thanks Eric.

Excellent blog.  Perhaps, you will have a follow up with information on women taking roles that were traditionally for men.  Girls should be constantly reminded that they have no limits on what they can achieve.

I hope you are having an outstanding week.  Keep cool with a camera in hand.

Hi Roy,

I am working on one as we speak. I tried to be very fair and put two pictures of males in primarily female occupations and two females in primarily male occupations. I think we have come a long way!

Good afternoon Kristin.

Great information...I wonder how  the recession affected their mind of taking those jobs...?

What a wonderful message Roy!

I find that either gender that works in the other gender's "traditional" field is much better at what they do because they truly want to be there.

Hi Joshua,

I think any job is better than none and these jobs are not unmanly either. I think our nation has become a unisex nation based on more fair practices, laws and regulations. I was in a career for 30 years that was primarily a man's occupation for the first 5 and then the rules became more tolerant of women. Now after 38 years, men and women are accepted. It took a long time coming.

Another consideration is that men and women now can wear unisex clothing. Before men wore pants and women wore skirts and dresses. Now in medical fields, many wear scrubs or pants with white jackets. Teachers wear more casual clothes, police and fire wear the same uniforms, flight attendants wear more casual clothes with just a color theme so they have a great wardrobe to choose from. It is a much better dress code for all. I think having men and women doing the same jobs gives everyone a all round better environment in the work place.

Hi Patty,

Yes we have workers who are happier, less stressed, and feel good about themselves and their jobs. I believe having many people with different backgrounds a much nicer environment regardless of sex. I think it is also good to have both sexes as you get different perspectives. Thanks for stopping Patty!

Kristin, the world is changing. Today anyone who has a job is considered lucky. If you still have a job and you don't get a pay increase or a promotion, you're considered luckier than those that were let go. Today, anything goes. There's no job security for anyone, man or woman. The barriers of discrimination are eroding and changing before our very eyes. We are all doing our best to survive the CHANGE. Let's hope the voters get it right this election year and all men and women get back to work with gainful employment and benefits.

Always, may the best man and/or woman win for equality in the workforce. And may home ownership, social security and retirement ALWAYS be an option for the future.

Great post Kristin!!!

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for stopping and complimenting my post and I might add your words are great too. It is a nice end to mine.

As women we have come a long way and have had lots of hurdles but the men have too. We (both sexes) are breaking boundaries still today and some day we will all be treated fair with equal pay and benefits.
