Today I am thankful to my friend Lisa Capparelli who volunteered to help my chapter of Meals on Wheels through the summer. Our regular Friday driver's daughter had some serious surgery and our driver wanted to spend the summer with her to help however she could. I met with Lisa today and she drove around with me on my regular route and fell in love with my folks as I knew she would. Lisa will take over some of the Fridays for our driver and it will be a huge help to all of us.
My friend Cheryl D'Ambrosio drives on route 3 the second and 4th Tuesday. She shares a route with a real sweetheart named Louise Dunleavy who recently started with us and is always the first person to volunteer when I need a substitute.
Liz Facenda and I work together at RE/MAX PREFERRED. Liz delivers meals every Wednesday and also helps with the driver coordination on route 3.
Rebecca Snyder delivers route 2 the second and 4th Friday of the month. She also completely oversees the drivers for this route which is an enormous help to me.
I am thankful to all of the volunteers, 23 of us, who drive either every week, or every other week for the 3 routes we deliver to in our area. We deliver up to 24 meals per day, 5 days a week. All of us are volunteers. The people that we deliver to on our routes have become very special to all of us and the drivers become special to our recipients. One of our drivers, an 85 year old man, had some serious surgery a while back and had to retire. Two different recipients asked me how he was today. It's a heart lifting and gratifying experience to see the relationships that grow and see people doing well with a hot meal and a smile. Thanks also to our list of substitute drivers who often volunteer at a moment's notice to help us out. Special thanks to Jeani Purcell, the Director of Meals on Wheels of Chester County, a former driver and chairperson of our chapter, who asked me to take over when she became director!
If you do not have a favorite charity, Meals on Wheels of Chester County would be a wonderful place to donate your hard earned money. Many clients in other parts of our county aren't able to contribute any money toward their meals and the office is paying their food providers with little or no money coming in.
Carpe Diem!
