The Maine Home's Square Footage Is 1433'. No No No....How Many Bedrooms?

Some people are bilingual and easily shift back and forth from one language to the other. In Northern Maine if a broker indicates to someone that has lived here all their life that a home's square footage is 1433' s/f, sometimes a quizzical look comes over the listener. The response is ..."How many bedrooms is how I gage in my head how big a place is." This benchmark for sizing up a place before seeing it may stem from the days on the farm with 11 and more children in the family and needing to stack them up like cord wood to sleep if you are in a John Boy Walton home where they all holler "Good night Jim Bob, Elizabeth...Momma....". Think of a place in Beverly Hills that may only have three bedrooms but a dozen other rooms and five baths and the confusion the bedroom count method would miss on this 10,750 S/F "modest home". How big is your roost and what square footage or bedroom count would you be happy with? In the old farm house, there was a glass side porch, open front porch, summer kitchen to can and preserve fruit and vegtables and a huge country size kitchen to get the crew feed at the crack of dawn and for the lunch and supper (dinner) stampede. A gymnasium size kitchen, a formal dining room, a living room and a front parlor for gentleman callers and funerals at home...and a root cellar basement that was used for storage for an abundant year in the crop fields! And don't forget the wood shed addition where the "facilities" were and where you disciplined the dennis the menance in the family. Overhead the shed was where the hired hand lived when he was not milking cows or plowing the back forty with the team of horses or John Deer 2 cylinder "B" tractor!
