David Savellano - Alameda Artist
The first time I saw David Savellano he was standing in front of his easel on the corner of Central Avenue and Park Street in Alameda. He was painting with quick strokes on a canvas. What began as lines of varying shades of brown was soon transformed into the scene I saw before him. It was a fascinating process and I lingered until he was finished. I was afraid to talk to him for fear of disturbing his concentration. I soon found that he is a gregarious person who loves to talk about his art.
According to David Savellano, “When you paint outdoors, you’re completely immersed in the scene - the atmosphere, the mood. You’re just soaking it in, feeling the subject - empathy-and actually capturing its essence. When I look at one of my paintings, I feel the energy of that place or scene like I was there yesterday. Ultimately, that’s the feeling I’, trying to induce in others who see my work.”
He is an amazing artist, who primarily works en plein air, painting in the open air, which means he must be quick and able to adapt to changing weather conditions. David says. “I enjoy working outdoors because it’s unpredictable and lends itself to a kind of spontaneity you just can’t get in a studio.”
David Savellano lives in Alameda and is a native California. He is a self-taught water-colorist. However, his 30 years experience as an architect contributed to his drawing skills and strong sense of perspective which make his paintings the wonderful creations they are. His watercolor of the Park Street Bridge to the right shows a bright light. That was my inept photography not David's work.
David is not only a fine painter he is also an excellent teacher who offers his students a generous amount of personal instruction which enables his students to improve their skills and knowledge.
I write about all things Alameda. On Fridays I write a blog post called Things to do in Alameda which is about events for the whole family to enjoy in Alameda. If you like what you see here, please come back for more or visit me on my Facebook page Living In Alameda.
