The Fabled (Some Say Mythical) Blue Deer

By

I have heard all the stories about the fabled (some say mythical) blue deer.

Boy Scoutmasters Virginia wide get the question a lot:

Does it exist?  Is there really a blue deer?

Well, I can tell you, campfire stories abound.

The next thing we'll see here are the researchers, with their night-vision goggles, thermal cameras and weird screeches at night trying to entice one into the open to get a glimpse of Virginia's "squatch."

And then there will be the TV show of the same.

The Northwest will be proud!

Personally I have never seen a blue deer.  And I have never spoken with anyone who has.

Sure, the stories abound.  But does the blue deer bound?

Then today, today!, while investigating a house in Northern Virginia, I ran across this.

There, for all to see, finally, is sure evidence all have waited to see.

Evidence of the blue deer.

I am not familiar enough with the species to know if this evidence is from adult or fawn, male or female.

But it is evidence nonetheless.

So now, I say to all you naysayers, especially in the Northwest, with your "videos," and "TV shows," (but no evidence) of "researchers," well, I have solid proof!

No doubt living in the thicket nearby, this deer did not come out to see me.

The fabled (some say mythical) blue deer knows which animal is the most dangerous in the forest, um, suburbs.

I thought it was half of a robin's egg.  But I will ask my son if he has heard stories of the blue deer.  He is working on his Eagle Scout.....if anyone has heard of it, I am sure he has!  Will let you know!

Jay, I am afraid blue dung does not a blue deer make---and as far as I know deer do not lay eggs.  That is more likely a Sasquach egg after drinking too much blue cool aid.

Jay -- you must have too much time on your hands to take time to blog on the blue deer -- or else the last couple of homes didn't have much too recommend them for blogging.

I'm still looking for Big Foot, so once I find them here in the Pacific NW, I will make sure to head your way and start the search for the Blue Deer and get back to you with my findings.

Jay, Well, Well... are you trying to steal our mythical thunder up here? I may have to send Squatch out to Virginia to trample your little blue deer ; )

Really I like it though. We even a have a beast in Lake Chelan "Ogopogo", Nessy is a Betsy compared to Ogopogo ; )

Cindy - the rubber smell may have given the robin a hint.

Kathryn - who knows if he has.  I can tell you, those are very popular stories.   ;>)

A&P - that would be Paul somebody, with things growing on his toes.  I can't remember what they are called.  Bunions, bunyons - something like that...  What was that guy's last name?

Rob - I hope they don't mix up the DNA results with a rubber ball or something similar.  Yes, terrific discovery, thanks!

Shadow - so, the Squatch is partial to raspberry Slurpees?  Who knew!?  Since deer don't lay eggs, that can only be one other thing.

Steven - either I'm having fun or trying desperately to contribute to mammalian scientific discover!  Either way, this is a great post to write!

Get back to me Todd!  I find that TV show with the squatch finders to be a bit ridiculous, so this post was intended to be tongue in cheek in that regard!  But still, get back to me!

Don - I have heard about Ogopogo.  Sounds a bit like an African bouncy toy!  You should know, I have a distant relative (many centuries ago) who was a Catholic missionary called to teach the pesky Picts in Northern Scotland.  They had him cornered against Loch Ness and family lore has it he rode a monster away to safety.

And Squatch might just find the deer, and share its den!  Even they like pets.

Jay, I have 1000 acres in the Great Dismal Swamp for sale. Do you have any interest? I am sure you can find Blue deer in there.

Jay- never heard of real or mythical blue deer but will Google it.  I thought it was an "unfound" egg from an Easter egg hunt!

Thanks Tom!  Maybe when I'm done with it it won't be so dismal!

Probably S&D, along with the alien mother ship and the 10 lost tribes.

Kathy - that is one of those "legends" that Boy Scouts hear about, along with bacon stretchers and smoke changers.  Then there's snipe hunting at night.  I didn't google it, but what comes up can't be all good!  I think that was one of those balls on the end of paddles with the long rubber bands.

Jay, I forgot to mention my property has some the best Snipe hunting in NE North Carolina and SE Virginia. It is only about 2 hours from you.

Tom - I am VERY good at getting young Boy Scouts up at night for a rousing snipe hunt!  Then, in the morning, send one over there for a bacon stretcher, and another further over there for a smoke changer.

We try to keep them away from the poison ivy at night though...

Jay, I remember my first scout camping trip very well. I spent 2 cold miserable hours on a snipe hunt. It is funny now but I was mad as Hell back then. We were at the Scoutmasters farm in rural Eastern North Carolina. I can to this day 50+ plus years later take you right to where I spent those 2 hours. LOL

Tom - my first scout trip I was sent early Saturday morning across a huge field to a tree on the other side of a farm next to the camp.  You could see the tree in the distance.  They told me that a bacon stretcher was hanging on the other side.  And to please get it for breakfast.

Funny, there was nothing there...
