Last week, my husband and I went on a short vacation to Charleston, SC to visit his two sisters.  Then on to Myrtle Beach to visit a friend.  We have never left Zeke, our chocolate lab,  for more than two days.  Once we left him at the kennel for three days and he ripped his bed to shreds.  So, I was hesitant to leave him at the kennel.

My friend’s daughter, Marietta Chaney, is a dog sitter.  After talking with her, and seeing that Zeke liked her, we decided to leave Zeke in the house and she would stop by four times a day.   Since we have never left him in the house alone, I was somewhat apprehensive about this situation,  and had to hold the tears back.

The house sitter, was so sweet. I would call to check on him and she said he was doing great...so she sends me the below photo... which made me smile.

Zeke, our happy dog smiling

Zeke seemed to be smiling at me saying not to worry mom, having a good time!

Marietta’s schedule for Zeke:

  • 8:00 AM -  feed and play with Zeke before going to work (She was less than a mile from work);
  • 12 noon -  had lunch on the patio and played with him for an hour
  • 4:30 PM - after work she stopped in to feed him and walk him; and
  • 8:00 PM  - walk and  play with him for an hour.

On Saturday, Marietta took him on a 3 mile walk on the Greenbrier RIver Trail and let him play in the river.

On Sunday, again a walk on the Greenbrier River Trail for a 5-mile walk and play in the river.

Zeke had a great time with Marietta and we will surely use her again and again and again.....She makes Zeke and I both smile!

I highly recommend Marietta she is fabulous and definitely great with animals!

Good to have someone you trust to watch your dog.  Unfortunately for us, we can never both get away at the same time cause no one can handle our whole crew.  (13 dogs and 1 cat).  To many variables and safety issues.

That is so sweet! And your pup made it the whole time as a good Fella? Neat!

A good house/dog sitter is worth their weight in gold.  In 2006, I made a trip to London.  During that time we were having a significant heat wave here in Sacramento.  I had a pet cat that was 19 years old.  My dog, Kodi, an American Eskimo, was overweight.  Anyway, the cat did pretty well.  The air conditioner here in the house was left on.  But, my dog, which is an outdoor dog, required more care and concern.  Fortunately, my family came by several times a day, and made sure he was made comfortable and kept cool.  I was glad to get home and see them in such good shape!

Pet sitters like Myrl said are definitely worth gold because it sometimes feels like no one can love and take care of your pet like you do.  I have a great pet sitter too and I shudder to think what I would do without her.

Hi Rebecca,

I would certainly love to find a home sitter for my 3 dogs but they usually just stop in once or twice a day and my girls need to go outside more than that plus they love human companionship. I would hire her if she was in Southern California.

Isn't it lovely to know you have someone like that to take care of Zeke.  One of the reasons I will not get a dog is I would never leave the house.

Rebecca, glad you found good backup care for Zeke. This week my daughter's babysat for a new family with 4 little boys, things went well and they said they will use them again. Good help is important especially when trusting with a loved one or pet.

Rebecca from the photo it sure looks like Zeke was in good hands.  Finding the right person to take care of the family pet can be stressful.

Howdy and evening Rebecca

Rebecca my friend, Zeke sure does look to be smiling in that there photo. It sure is hard to leave ones family pet member when its going to be days. Marietta sure does sound like a mighty fine puppy dog sitter, that folks can be sure will take mighty fine care of and be a friend of their family puppy dog.

  Have a good one
