Bloggers Connect –Readers Digest version of the one day event.

Bloggers Connect was part of the Inman Real Estate Connect Conference in New York. All the issues discussed during the workshop have been extensively covered on Active Rain. If you are interested in blogging and have been on the Active Rain forum for a few months, most likely you already read about the technical and other aspects of blogging that were raised at the workshop.

The major point that I took away is that blogging is not science, at least not yet. Even bloggers with experience and recognition as experts have opposing views and do it the way they found successful for their objectives and market.

The sessions were organized as panels and many did not quite correspond to the title of the session. Perhaps the most value of this post would be in the links of the panelists, so you can read their blogs and experience their craft first –hand.

Here is the brief overview of some of the sessions.

Avoid the Content Brick Wall
Pannelist: Rudy Bachraty, Co-Founder, Sellsius & Founder, Kiosk Realty
Kris Berg, Broker ,Associate Prudential California Realty
Jeff Corbett, Author, The XBroker Blog
Dan Green, Chief Blogging Officer, Bring the Blog

All the panelists are prolific writers and writers block did not seem to be their problems. It is usually not my problem either, which probably explains why I did not have any notes written down at this session.
There was a discussion of how much personality these bloggers included into their writing. The opinion varied, just like on Active Rain. The important point was that the local markets and neighborhoods provide enough content to write about.

Videoblogging and Podcasting
Douglas Heddings, Senior Vice President, Prudential Douglas Elliman
Rachel Natalie Klein, Founder, IntoTheBox.tv
Daniel Rothamel, Realtor, Strong Team REALTORS; Blogger, RealEstateZebra.com
Mike Price, President, ML Broadcast

Jeff Turner moderated the panel. The participants ranged from professional video journalist, to someone who subcontracts video blogging to professionals, to someone who is doing it by himself.
The messages in this session: video blogging can be very successful, but it requires time, or money or both.

The keynote address -The Future of Blogging

Lockhart Steele, Founder and Publisher, Curbed.com

Curbed.com is a blog about neighborhoods in New York City. They operate as a news provider on a micro level, trying to get the news before others and focusing on builders, neighborhoods, and apartment buildings.  The business operates on the ad revenue, and in that sense did not have much relevance to me. Mr. Steele talked about the importance of the editorial content, distribution channels and community building. He described how their blog gets sometimes “taken over” by the readers, who continue to have a conversation on a post, long after it was written. In that way the blog serves as a forum for local conversation.

Marketing Your Blog
Erik Hersman, Principal, Zungu LLC
Drew Meyers, Community Relations Specialist, Zillow.com
Reggie Nicolay, Regional Technology Director, Fidelity National & Author, MyTechOpinion.com
Brian Rothenberg, Product Manager, Yahoo! Real Estate

The main points of the conversation were about increasing traffic through quality links, commenting on other people’s blogs, using analytics to understand your readership, and syndication. This information has all been covered on Active Rain.
There was a discussion of the importance of the title and H1 Meta tags –nothing different then we read on Tomato Blog or RSS Pieces and other blogs.  There were differing opinions on the “call to action” button, which followed the same pro and con arguments as on the numerous Active Rain posts.  There was also no unanimous opinion on the use of a blog’s side bar.

Brush Up Your Netiquette: Blogosphere's Best Practices
Teresa Boardman, Realtor/Broker, Keller Williams Integrity Realty
Jay Thompson, Designated Broker, Thompson’s Realty

The discussion covered the importance of protecting ones reputation on the Internet, the care to be taken when writing for a blog, dealing with the plagiarizers and annoying commenters. Teresa and Jay both have pretty liberal policy of allowing comments and disagree when they have to in a patient and respectful manner. They are not tolerant of plagiarizers. When a plagiarizer took Teresa’s post in it’s entirety she substituted her original photos with the “bad variety” ones.

Steer Your Blog Toward the Long Tail
Moderators:
Brian Brady, Managing Director, Worldwide Credit Corporation
Dustin Luther, Founder, 4realz.net Consulting

Brian focused the audience on the question of having a plan for their blog and having permission from the readers to market to them. Mr. Luter talked about the content being the most important thing. The issue of the “long tail” did not come up till the very end, when the concept was explained – you can get more readers in aggregate from the long tail then from the top key words.

The Housing Debate: Bull vs. Bear

Moderator: Andrew Ross Sorkin, Assistant Editor, Business & Finance, Chief Mergers and Acquisitions Reporter, The New York Times
Panelists:
Dottie Herman, President & CEO, Prudential Douglas Elliman
Barry Ritholtz, Chief Market Strategist, Ritholtz Research & CEO; Director of Equity Research, Fusion IQ
Noah Rosenblatt, Founder, UrbanDigs.com/Licensed RE Salesperson, Citi-Habitats
Professor Nouriel Roubini, Co-Founder & Chairman of RGE Monitor; Professor of Economics, New York University’s Stern School of Business

This 45- minute session boiled down to the “ the biggest crash in the history does not have an end in-site and repercussions will be severe and long lasting”. The only one representing the bulls was Ms. Herman, who suggested that people still need to buy homes and that the current housing market set back is necessary as a price correction.

Missy -thanks. It did take me a while to put this post together and compress the ideas to the major points (plus get all the links, which I thought were important). I wanted to do it as one way of giving back to the AR community, which continues to educate and enrich most of us.

Faina.....  I am actually working on mine right now, since I didn't take any pictures.... but I guess I was in many of them... lol   And I can link to this, since I missed 2 of these sessions. So thanks for putting this together.  But I did get to attend one that you all didn't, since I went to the wrong one... lol

Hey, I am glad that you could make it. It was a pleasure to have met you.  And I still haven't forgotten about you and your financing question. I will be sending those e-mails by first thing in the morning.  thanks

Hi Faina,
Thanks for summarizing the Connect sessions.  From what you told us, it seems that we are getting pretty much the same information here on AR.  I have bookmarked this for reading the links.  Thanks.

Faina, thank you for bringing the rest of us to the conference.  I love that story from Teresa Boardman about getting at the plagiarizer.  It is good to know that our education here is top shelf.

I have NOT forgotten that I owe you a phone call!

Faina~ good summary of everything we listened to on Wednesday.  I agree completely with your observation that the topics discussed were at times out of kilter with the panel title.

Tara -thanks for stopping by and your comment.

Jeff - it would be interesting to read about your "by mistake" attended session. These were focused on broader issues then just blogging.

Cynthia -yes, we pretty much heard most of it on AR. Again, what stands out in my mind is the emphasis on local content, since it helps to connect with your readers.

Marc - I certainly enjoyed the workshops. The sessions were 45 minutes and were in an informal Q&A format. As such, it would have been difficult to cover things on a detail level. Of course the big part of the enjoyment was meeting with AR folks.

Elaine - Teresa's story was a clever way to deal with non-scrupulous people. I can imagine the surprise of the plagiarizing guy, when he saw the posts with Teresa's substitutes photos. You don't owe me anything:)

Lisa -it was a bit strange that most of the sessions did not stick to the advertised topic. The format of them being panel discussions and Q&A was probably what diverted the attention from the original topics.

Faina- Thank you so much and now I do not have to feel like I might have missed something by not going! Sounds like most of all already know these topics, can write and talk about them and also have developed our own opinions therein. Thanks for the hard work and time you went through to develop this post. Katerina

Faina, thanks for providing a pretty good and concise wrap-up of the sessions that you attended.  The rest of the conference was quite good too, and not quite as depressing as listening to Professor Roubini describe the coming financial apocalypse!  I enjoyed meeting you this past week and hope that you felt the sessions you went to were worth your time.

Hi Faina - thank you so much for this summary of the conference, and it's nice to read a post about the actual content that was covered there.  I like the way you broke down each session, and it's really interesting to see how much education we really do get here on Active Rain.

Thank you for the time you spent putting this together for us!

Faina, thanks so much for the update.  It sounds like the discussions were similar to those we have right here on AR but the true value of the event was meeting and networking with fellow bloggers!

Thanks for the summary.  I am disappointed to have missed it.  It would be difficult to summarize all that your learned and all the people you had the opportunity to meet!  I hope to attend the next one in San Francisco!

Thank you for your summary it does give a better picture of what goes on in the conference. I'm not far from San Francisco and had considered going to the conference last summer.

hi faina!

i really enjoyed meeting you at the active rain party. you're right, neighborhoods are where it's at. the more local the info the better. if i'm looking to move to princeton, i want to find an agent who knows it inside and out. what they think about national issues really doesn't matter as much to me.

j. belonger - you are an absolute riot. glad to meet you in person finally.

best,

-rudy

The main point that came through loud and clear for me was that covering the hyper-local content is important for the bloggers who are looking to attract consumers. The majority of the presenters focused primarily on real estate, with their personality and attitudes being reflected in their real estate related posts. There were fewer who also occasionally mentioned personal things in their blogs.

Thanks for everyone who commented here. I encourage you to read the blogs of the presenters at the workshops -that's the best way to learn from the best.

Rudolph- it was great talking to you at the party. I was impressed with your idea of hiring technology savvy agents and encouraging their blogging. Thanks for stopping by here.

Thanks for bringing those us of who could not attend along with you, Faina.  Very interesting ground you appeared to have covered.  I would have really liked to sit in on the last panel.  More importantly, did you have a good time?
