MENTOR PROGRAMS ARE USED BY MANY REAL ESTATE COMPANIES.Agent

However, I believe that the broker or office manager should be the mentor.

"But, Lenn, you say, an experienced agent can help new agents."

The mentor devotes time to help the new agent with procedures, training, marketing their services, etc. and receives a percentage of the new agent's commission.

Make sense???  Perhaps.

However, it is the BROKER OR OFFICE MANAGER with the responsibility for that new agent's actions.

Brokers have the risk associated with new agent's actions and need to be involved in new agent training.

Just my opinion folks.

Via California Coast & Country Homes, Inc.:

It’s important to affiliate ourselves with top producers.  If you hang-out with the top producers, you’re going to be a top producer.  If you hang-out with people who aren’t very active in the business, that’s probably where you’re going to be.  So it’s all about affiliating with people who are where you want to be, and where you want to go.

We recommend participating in a formal Apprentice Mentor Program.  For the apprentice, ask yourself “What would you like to learn?”,  “What can you contribute?”  You can just ask yourself those questions.  For  mentors – “What can you teach to others? “.

Each of us can be an apprentice and we can each be a mentor because even the people who are top producers in the business have a coach.  They have a mentor.  They have someone they’re learning from.  Even somebody who has just started out in the business can teach somebody else what they have learned; so we can all be a teacher and a student in various ways.

It’s a win-win program both for the apprentice and the mentor.

Apprentice Benefits:

·    On-the-job training program (no cost to you)
·    Learn from an experienced pro
·    Affiliate with top producers

Mentor Benefits:

·    Get assistance with tasks
·    Give back to others
·    Make a positive impact on our industry

At California Coast & Country Homes, we have a formal mentor program.

Stay tuned for the details of our 90-day program!

Good morning Lenn. I agree with you. If I am responsible for that agents actions I want to be the one training them. There are WAY too many agents teaching themselves because of a lack of leadership.

Lenn, I would have to agree with you especially when it comes to the liability. The broker is the one who is liable. If the Broker or Office Manager (who is usually an Assoc. Broker) train the new agent the risk of liability is greatly reduced that's for sure.

Randy.   Brokers should know better.  No way I'm giving the responsibility of training a new agent to another agent when I'm the one at risk.

Bobbie.  Absolutely.  Brokers also have that duty.

Training should be everything.  I have always understood that the broker is the office teacher.  But I do know of offices that have the "mentoring" program.

Jay.  The mentoring programs in many offices provides for an experienced agent to assist the listing agent with the same in exchange for about 25% of the fee.

However, my experience is that the mentor doesn't spend the time with the listing agent for careful supervision and training.
