Parking Meters in Manhattan Beach, CA: Past, Present and Future!

In fairness to disclosure, I am all for progress. Then again sometimes we get confronted with the past and we are pleasantly surprised that “old” is still good and it works.  No need to change it since it still works.

As you know I love to go to Manhattan Beach, CA all the time. I blog about this community and all the great things it has to offer to the visitors, locals and neighbors. This was a fun experience for me to discover as the past and the present are crossing paths and the future is nearby.

Parking can be a challenge during the summer months, unless you know where the “available spots” are. As it turns out I do, FYI you need to park one street above Manhattan Ave if there are none available. The only thing you need is “Quarters” now with that said check out this Parking Meter where I parked.

So what does the future hold? I have heard that there is a plan in place in the Greater Los Angeles area that once you pulled out of your parking spot the Time will automatically reset to Zero. In other words gone will be the days when you find an empty spot and generally you could be rewarded with anywhere from 1 minute to 45 minutes of free parking. So sad, no more chances of winning the Parking Lottery!

Endre, They're getting ready for the day when no one carries cash :).   The day was coming when Mickey D's started taking credit cards for the drive thru windows.

Endre, it is a bummer, but really only makes sense with the evolution of technology. It is kind of cool to see old stuff that still works perfectly.

Hi Endre, You are so right about losing the opportunity at the parking lottery. We live in strange times only to be assured that technology will continue to take the human chance out of our options. Glad you have found a special spot for as long as it lasts.

Endre, it's too bad the future will stop all the good parking meter karma from floating around...I liked to leave extra time for the next car and it was also cool to find extra time when I parked as well. :)

Endre - Great post on parking meters.  Love the old parking meters and the coins, but using the credit card is also handy.  I guess in the more expensive areas, credit card is the way to go!

Endre, I was on city council in Manhattan Beach when we rolled these modern "solar powered" meters out! Remember, our retail merchants were overwhelmed by people asking for quarters which made them frustrated. So we installed these new "credit/debit" card reading meters only in the heavy traffic areas of the city. The "old school" meters remain in those areas of minimal traffic or away from the beach. Also, the city has no intention to follow the City of LA idea to bury wires in each parking stall and have the meter "Reset to Zero". Thats not how we work in Manhattan. I appreciate your kind words about my city and encourage everyone to come visit - often! Richard

Richard thank you for reading my post and your constructive comment. I am happy to hear that Manhattan Beach does not intend to bury wires in each parking spot to be able to "Reset to Zero" This is great news!, Endre
