What should you do on a rainy Monday in the summer and the kids need something to do?  A friend of mine in the Rollingwood neighborhood hosted a Kids Indoor Olympic Games.  Did I mention that she was 9 months pregnant and due that week?  But she still whipped up the games idea in the morning to play that afternoon to celebrate her last full day with her boys before the baby was born!
Kids olympics
There were 8 kids "competing" and their ages were 3 1/2 to 10 years old.  The games were timed to determine the winner and we had four competitions:

A plastic cup race where kids blew a cup across the room on a ribbon.  This one took some tweaking - we started out with the kids using straws but they just didn't have enough air to move the cups.  We let them blow on their own and they got the cups moving a lot better!

The next game was hilarious!  The kids had 30 seconds to see how many ping pong balls they could shake out of a tissue box.  The trick - the box was tied around their waists so they had to dance them out!  The best time was 4 seconds but most kids took the whole time.  It was so funny to see everyone's technique!  The grown ups who were there joked that we should play that game after some adult beverages.

The third game actually was like the adult game of beer pong.  The kids cups were filled with water of course but it was still funny to watch it played by little ones.  Most kids got just a few ping pong balls in the cups but one boy bounced fifteen of them in there.  His Mom agreed she would need to keep an eye on him in high school - hee hee!

The last but certainly not the least was the Cheese Curl Shaving Cream toss.  In teams of 2 - one kids put on a shower cap which got covered in shaving cream and the other kid would toss cheese curls and try to get them to stick.  We were all cracking up - another game that adults could play after a few drinks!

The afternoon ended with all the kids getting medals and each event had a gold, bronze and silver winner who all posed on several stools to mimic the Olympic awards ceremony.

Everyone had a great time and it made us excited for this summer to watch our athletes compete in slightly more challenging games!

Wow, what a dedicated (and creative) mom your friend is! And what a fun even to get to take part in. Why didn't I ever do something like that when mine were little?

Ellie, that could not be more appropriate in an Olympic year. Someone had some great imagination to boot.
