Did you know the town of Columbia offers Community Garden Plots?  There are 3 locations and I was pleased to visit one this week when a friend asked me to water her garden plot while she is out of town for 2 weeks.
Columbia Garden Plot
What an oasis!  Down an easy to miss dirt road across from Long Reach High School (and just down the street from my office) are at least 100 garden plots and they were already growing like crazy!  Many of them had fences to protect them from critters but others were just vegetables growing right in the ground.  The plots are 25x20 feet on average and you could tell some of the plots had been really built up and tended over the years.  Several had large wooden owls on stakes high above the plants to keep away birds!

I saw tons of tomato plants in cages, squash, cantalope and cucumbers vining on the ground, peas plants snaking up trellises and lots of large lettuce and other vegetables.  Many of the plots also had flowers growing to make them even more appealing.

The plots are available for a small rental fee and gardeners are encouraged to grow year round and try new crops each season.  In order to secure a plot you are also asked to donate 4 hours of volunteer work in the community garden.

The plots include a water source, compost materials, gardening seminars and lots of other gardeners to share tips, challenges and the "fruits" of your labor.
Garden local and love it in Columbia!

I really, really wish we had something like the Community Garden in Columbia in my area.  I would absolutely LOVE it and I am sure that so many would participate.  It's great to see such community involvement in Columbia.

That's really neat Ellie, it gives people who live in apartments an opportunity to tend to their own garden. Nothing tastes sweeter than a tomato that you've grown yourself.

I am a Maryland transplant from many other places, most recently Florida, but since 1997 I have found my true home in the heart of this great State. Maryland has it all. Mountains 3 hours to the West, the Atlantic Ocean 3 hours to the East and head North and South for either Philadelphia and New York or Washington DC. It is the perfect location! The Metro Baltimore area offers a rich mix of history and modern amenities. City living, suburbia or "not a neighbor in sight" is available in this area. Excellent Schools, amazing communities and an incredible location is why many people choose to live in Central Maryland. I proudly help my clients buy and sell all types of homes in Howard County and beyond. Enjoying the entire process is my goal for my clients. Every transaction is different and everyone has different needs. I know the Metro Baltimore area well and I am current on the Real Estate Market activity- That's my job. As your "Buyers Agent" I will work diligently to find you the home that suits all your needs. I will update you immediately when a home matches your search criteria.
