I am used to intersting questions but this one made me sit up straight. As a leading Listing Agent in the Manchester NH area I get to see alot, Have I seen it all? Probabily not becuase each day brings a new adventure and new challenges both of which I live. So yesterday when the phone rings and the gentleman asks "Can I mow your lawn?" At first thought it was another sales call trying m to get me to use their services. But then he said i am the neighbor of "123 Main Street" which was foreclosed on. The bank is doing a POOR job cutting the grass and maintaining the house , can i do it? 

I had to explain to him the Bank uses a national company to perform these preservation and maintenance tasks. He then said i dont want to be paid, I want at least the front yard to look as good as every other house in my neighborhood and I'll do it for free.

I asked what he wanted to do. He said "let me cut the grass, i will weed whack, put down some fertilizer and point my sprinkler that way to keep it green." He added how bad the company is that comes to mow, that they were too lazy to pick up papers on the lawn and just mowed over everything. That they mow every 2 weeks and it is not enough, that the grass can grow 6 inches in a week. I have to agree that these national companies are not doing any justice to the banks. The banks are paying too much and getting poor quaility of work which affects values and neighbors.

I told him I would have to seek permission in writing from the bank to allow him to do this in case of liability. In the mean time i drove by to complete my monday morning checks and noticed the lawn was greener, mowed, neat and all the trash was gone. I think the angel lawn mower visited over night anyway....

In conclusion it is a shame the banks do not always care about how the REO homes look, that by trying to save a buck, they actually spend more and get less. It is my sign on the lawn, i would prefer to manage maintenance so it is up to my standards which would be how I want my lawn to look.  It is nice to hear that neighbors care and even nicer for one to thank me for caring about their neighborhood.
