In Only Thirty-One Days athletes from all over the globe will be competing for GOLD, BRONZE and SILVER showing mastery of their sport. Many years of training brings any athlete to this venue. It is the culmination of long hours of hard work, sacrifice and an enormous amount of discipline. I find it interesting hearing the stories of the athletes and how they reach this moment in their lives.
In Newburgh NY, our Olympic Hopeful is Samyr Laine. He will be competing in Track and Field in the Triple Jump. His passion for sports began in high school and Samyr is now headed to London England and the 2012 Summer Olympics. He is not only an inspiration to our community in the Hudson Valley, but his story inspires and brings hope to an entire nation. Although born in the USA, his parents are from Haiti. Since they emigrated he is therefore eligible to represent Haiti in the competition. His ties to Haiti, and the Haitian community are deep and although he is a US Citizen he is proud and honored to represent them in the competition.
I knew Samyr when he was very young. In the Newburgh School District he was in the student council along with my daughter, Kathleen. Early on he showed leadership and great potential was elected President of the Student Council. As they both grew older they were both on the debate team and summer camp at Vassar College. Growing up in the Hudson Valley, Newburgh still holds a special place for him.
Samyr Laine began his athletic training in high school at Newburgh Free Academy. When I asked about sharing his story he was happy to hear about my blog featuring positive things about our town. He no longer lives here in our community, but his love of Newburgh and the Hudson Valley are still very apparent.
Samyr has made his family and hometown very proud. At 27, Samyr has quite a few accomplishments other than his Triple Jump Ranking. His academic achievements alone are quite impressive.

How he has been able to do all of this and compete at the same time I have no clue! It seems that he is able to so many things so well and all at the same time!! Wishing Samyr, all the best in the competition... and hope that all his Olympic dreams become reality. The truth is that just being there... he is already a winner!
