A soffit and ridge vent system is a great way to ventilate an attic. The air enters through the attic and exits at the ridge vent. The difference in pressure from the outside and inside helps to keep the air flow moving. At this Virginia Beach home inspection there were ridge vents installed which was noted as I walked across the roof. When I later entered the attic I did see that the roof sheathing was cut for the ridge vent, but then I realized that the roofing paper was rolled right over the opening. So now the only ventilation was at the soffits with nowhere for that air to exit.
