Rivermont is Lynchburgs VA first planned street car housing development and to keep it easy, the main road through the area is also called Rivermont. Rivermont Ave runs 3.8 miles and follows the shape of the James River as it curves around the north side of town and forms a natural border for the area. Consisting of 192 acres of single family, duplexes, commercial and light industrial, Rivermont was developed to be a self-contained community in that residents could complete most of their day to day activities /needs right there in the area.
The development of Rivermont started in the late 1800’s to early 1900s. The Rivermont area enjoys diversity in housing styles even though they were al built around the same time. Many of the homes were designed by famous Lynchburg architects Stanhope Johnson and Edward G. Frye along with architects for out of state such as William Poindexter and Penrose Stout.
Rivermont is Lynchburg Largest Historic District. Due to its size it is consider two separate Historic Districts upper and lower Rivermont.
