Capturing the past before it slowly fades away!

Old Coca Cola sign in Madras GeorgiaEvery day, as we remain focused on business and meeting our deadlines, our travels take us past some relics of days gone by that are slowly eroding into oblivion.

And although our pressing schedules exert immutable forces to keep us moving, it is possible to authoritatively combat the dictates of time and pause for just a moment to preserve a vestige of the past.

There are many times that I have done so just in the nick of time. The peeling Coke sign depicted here has been painted over. I have photographs on many old buildings that have since been demolished either by accident, forces of nature, or by design.

History disappears every day.  How many times have we asked ourselves: “I wish I would have taken a picture of it before it was gone?”

For me, that no longer happens very often!

Good morning Richard,

Pictures are worth a thousand words and I applaud you for taking the time to capture the past before it slowly fades away!

perhaps this lesson can be used in some of the listings when they only provide one photo. In the age of the digital camera, come on Agents one pic. REALLY???

As a hobbyist photographer myself, I understand EXACTLY what you mean and I couldn't agree more. I love looking at old photos that capture something that no longer is. I also enjoy capturing something that will be no longer.

The scenery will always change and having a captured image to remember (and share with others) is a good thing.

Hi Richard - I just took pictures of my yard (beautiful with all the rain we have had) because in a few short weeks it won't look the same!

Nothing stays the same.. and the only constant is change! It is fun to take photos to go back and look again and again and try to remember what i was thinking or doing in my life at the time that the photos were taken.

I have always found it fascinating to look at old photos of places I know.

Atlantic Avenue when cars were on the beach.

Broad Street in Philly.

Fifth Avenue in NY.

Looking at the cars, the buildings, the clothes,, the hairstyles, etc etc.

Great fun.

One additional thought, people actually have collections of old Coca Cola bottles.

Richard, you are so right. As our third and last child heads off to college in the fall I say "where did all those years go" and so you are right. Need to take more time to "smell the roses" while they are still here. Thanks

Love looking at old pictures.  Just last week I went out and bought a new camera to start taking pictures for the very reason you mentioned above.  Thanks for posting this.

Photo's is what will preserve much of our history.  Every year even some preserved history falls by the wayside because f some disaster.  One day photo's will be all we have.
